whistler question
i already have a set of chrome halos, but i want to make them black. im sure i could just do the whistler mod and it would be fine right?
second, i see alot of people who do the whistler mod, their headlights turn out good but its more of like a flat black. can you find spray paint that will produce a high gloss black? im also having a couple of other items professionally painted gloss black on my car soon, could i just have the painter do my headlights with professional grade paint, or would that not look right.
and lastly, this is an opinion based question, should i paint just the front of the halos like they come from the manufacture? or should i go all the way back like the whistler mod?
thanks guys.

sorry guys, i like that halos
mjmaro, did you use a high gloss black or is that more of a flat? im looking for a very high gloss look to match my roof and when i paint the berger panel, what do you guys think if i had the paint shop do my headlights with paint at the same time they did my berger panel?

My suggestion.
Stock headlights...
1 can primer, 2 cans of gloss black, 2 cans of clear.
1500-2000 grit sandpaper
Red Scotchbright
Any brand of Rubbing Compound.
A lint free cloth
A bowl of water.
Masking Tape.
Sponge.
Mask headlights accordingly. I would spray the primer on in at least 4 coats. Allow to dry and sand with scotch bright. Clean service with compressed air or tack free towel. Make sure the surface is free from all dirt.
Spray the Gloss black in light coats. I would personally use almost an entire can. The second can is for back purposes only. Allow 15 minutes between coats for paint to dry.
Read the back of the can before sanding. I would then grab my 1500 grit paper and place it in the bowl of water along with the sponge. Sand painted area's with 1500 grit paper staying away from sharp edges. Use the sponge with the sandpaper to be sure you have constant water to the sandpaper. Sand untill smooth.
Take clear coat and do same steps as the gloss black. Only difference being using 2,000 grit. Soak the lint free towel with water. Dip it in the rubbing compound. Apply to sanded areas in circular motions. Stay away from hard edges.
You should achive a high gloss finish when those steps are complete. This is such a basic write up it hurts, but if you have any questions be sure to ask... I'm here all day.

That much work isn't really necessary. I used a semi gloss on mine, just mask off what you don't want black, scuff the plastic, spray with black paint. Since it is just plastic you need not worry about primer and since it is in a sealed housing you don't need to clear coat it, unless you want the inside of your light to look like the outside of a black car. High gloss in a headlight may look a little "toy car"ish. To each his own, and mod YOUR car according to YOUR likes/dislikes.

I bet the bodyshop would do your lights at the same time they did your Berger. To save a bit of money you may want to do most if not all of the prep work. Try posting some pics of your car so we can get an overall feel on what you are trying to accomplish then you may get more usable feedback.

as it sits now with my chrome 10 spokes
with a buddys z06 wheels
when i first got her
And this is how i would like it to look
back...
not sure about the wheels, i like the chrome zr1's but may go with black tt2's or some all black z06's. i like the black and red because it gives it a real sinister kind of look
I like the high gloss look because i want it to match my roof, berger panel, and other black parts of the car.
got any pics of yours z34_nut??
