I did the same thing. I used 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit sandpaper, plastic polish, and Whistlered them. A month later I bought Halos. Stupid me!

Would it be ok to use 600 grit sandpaper for the whistler mod?

I started with 400 grit sand paper, then went to 800 and 1200 then finished with 2000. For the actual polishing I ordered the novus plastic polishing kit http://www.noscratch.com/novus/index.shtml after both my brother and I used other brands that didn't work as well. I started at the #3 polish then used the #2 and #1 although the #2 seemed like it did all the work. For the Whistler mod I baked the lights at 200f for 20 minutes, split them open, roughed up the plastic with medium steel wool, taped everything I didn't want painted ,sprayed with regular medium gloss black and used black rtv silicone with a pointed tip to close them back up. Including installing clear corners it took around 4 hours to complete.

I would use medium-soft steel wool but if you are going to use sand paper I would start with a 400-600 then go to 800 and finish with 1200-1500 so it doesn't look to rough inside the lenses.

I snapped a few pictures tonight with the lights installed. I also did the clear corners and grill.
