I use a Canon A630, it's a nice camera for the <$250 range. All depends on your price limit and what size you want (among a few other features).
Other than the border the picture is unedited. This camera pics up the lows and mid tones really well but tends to wash out the bright values as will most low-mid end digi cameras.

Point 'n' Shoots are tiny cameras with lots of megapixels...But their processors/chips are really tiny and dont hold any kind of great value.
A dSLR is a camera with moderate or high megapixels that can change out lenses and have nice size processors/chips to hold more value information.

It's pretty easy to use and produces great results. Rebel XT is a good choice or the Nikon D200.
