Default Ugly Caliper Paint

I painted my calipers last night. I'm not sure if I got a bad can of paint or if it was user error (most likely), but they look like . Does anyone know the best way to strip the paint. I assume paint thinner would work, but I wasn't sure if that would be bad for the seals. I will probably get them powdercoated, which is what I should have done in the first place.

Also, if I dissasemble the calipers to have them powder coated, where can I get a rebuild kit for the seals and the rubber boot? Or can I put the old parts back in if I'm careful taking them out. Thanks guys.

I'd try sanding down the areas you painted and try it again. Make sure to follow the instructions on the can. Make sure you totally degrease them before trying to paint!

did you wire brush your calipers before you painted? did you clean them in any way? this may be why your paint looks like ****.

anyway you could probably wire brush off the crappy paint

I did clean them thoroughly. I even ran a white rag over them before I painted. I used several thin coats and it just didn't want to stick on certain spots. Kinda like oil and water. So then I started using thicker coats, and it still didn't want to cover those spots. Then I got runs because of the thicker coats. So at this point, it was black spots behind white paint or runs. I opted for runs (lesser of the 2 uglies). Either way, it looks nasty. I used G2 Caliper paint. I heard it was a very good brand. I have corvette brakes, and there is a lot of globbing around the lettering. Very irritating.

sounds like there was oil still on your calipers... The best thing is brake kleen. Its a pressurized can, and it will stripe fresh paint, and ANY residue. If you over spray at all, make sure to clean it off with fresh water.

Good luck with the project.. I almost bought a car that was visually identical to yours last summer. You wouldn't happen to be from NorCal would you?

I would go with a brush on kit. Thats what i have done all my cars with and never had a problemw ith it yet. I think the Dupli-COlor kit is about $15.00 at an autoparts store.

I'd just get some brake cleaner. Depending upon the kind of paint the brake cleaner will blast the paint right off and will also clean the surface.

Dupli-color spray...3 years...still look GREAT. You must not have cleaned/degreased properly.

Did you say your using white paint on your calipers!

Also, all I did was use high temp paint on mine. Three years later they sill look good when clean.

Yeah I'm not so sure white paint is a good idea. I bet it would look cool when it's freshly painted...but brakes are a dirty area and you'll be repainting those suckers all the time!

As far as your problem goes, I used the spray can on mine and put on a few coats and then used a brush to put on the last layer to even it all out and make sure everything was covered nicely.
