Default Polishing calipers the hard way

I decided to try and polish my calipers using the sanding block and corded drill. All I can say to those who utilized this method is... YOU'RE NUTS! My *** is going to Sears tomorrow to buy a compressor and mini polishing kit for an early birthday gift to myself. I would be here all night using 200 sheets of 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block. I went down to 180 grit and got a sanding disc for the drill and that helped out a bit, but this is insane. I can't imagine how long it would take to do all 4 calipers by hand. I'll report back tomorrow night on the hopeful improvements.

(heh) I feel your pain. I live in an apartment so the only place I can work on my car is in the parkade, which conveniently has no electrical outlets. On top of that it's apparently illegal to do mechanical work on a car in a parkade (been busted once, got off with a warning...) in this province so the only time I can work is after about 10:30 in the evening.

I started with 80 grit on the really bad parts, the casting flash and deep gouges, switched to 120 grit for the first full pass, then 220, 340, 400 at lastly 800. I want to finish off with some tripoli & rouge but I have no idea how I gonna put it down...

Well after looking all over for a polishing kit, nobody around here has them in stock. So I came home and gave it another shot. They actually came out halfway nice. I stopped at 600 and hit it with white rouge and they shined up more than I expected. I agree that the starting grit should be either 80 or 120. Stay tuned, the weekend isn't over yet!
