I'd be up for this, I would definately keep the foldout cupholder though. Its the only one I need. Also, the position of the armrest is perfect already with the 6-speed. Make sure I'd have somewhere for my arm and I would be good.

lol, it's FrankenThread...

Anyway, cool idea, I think if the thread starter doesn't have any updates, I may start a similar project myself. I just finished my aluminum lid, it's time for another endeavor in uniqueness.

The idea never died off by any means. I ran into issues with trashing my old motor and having some misfiring issues with my new motor....these took priority. I have been working on many other projects as well.

It seemed as though I did not get many positive responses for the product. I have one and my friend has one. There is also another guy interested in one. Most people complained that there is no "junk holder" or an arm rest. This is exactly what I was trying to get rid of. I also see no need for a cupholder(s).

My friend has used his since we started the project and he likes it. It has no guage holes, nothing. He is using just a bare console with a vinyl like covering. I used mine for about a month in my car, with it completely bare. I have had my entire interior taken out of my car for over a year now though and have driven no more than 300 or so miles since then. I have to finish getting a rearend, painting the rollbar, and buying a passenger Corbeau seat before I completely finish the console.

If anyone is interested in just a bare console, let me know. The bare ones with no holes, covering, or finish work done could be made in about 4 days. The price for a bare piece is somewhere in the $325 shipped range though. These take alot of time to make by hand laying the fiberglass. This is a bit steep to some, but I think it is well worth it. I hate the stock one.

I think fiberglass is the wrong approach. I think I'll weld up a sheetmetal mockup, and If I like it, build it entirely out of aluminum. This could be finished in any way (carpet, paint, CF, anodized, etc.) and would definitely be faster to build.

We were actually going to try sheetmetal at the beginning the "idea" stages of the project, but decided against it. The curvature on the console would be a pain in the *** on the forward part of it. They are complex curves rather than simple curves. This would be a pain with sheetmetal. It could be done though.

Painting it is a very good idea, however it would not be very durable for something that is rubbed on, touched, etc like the console. If you could paint it and then put a VERY thick clear coat on it, it could probably last awhile. Painting on the gelcoated fiberglass finish may take longer than expected with sanding it smooth and painting and sanding....etc.

Agreed, the top portion of the console (lid) would pose a problem, but the hard plastic is achievable, as you can see by the door trim/console trim pieces. Only issue is bleeding out the oils from the plastics to create a smoot surface for bonding. Soaking, and sanding, etc. etc. -- too much time for preparation IMO.

That is why I shyed away from that portion of the console! Keep us posted!

covering with CF would take care of most of the prep problems with painting. any pics, even of a rough one?

Here are the pics that were taken in 2003....

http://frontiernet.net/~yoneko/CenterConsole/

A bare one would just not have all the holes cut into it. We looked into covering it with CF...briefly. Most people are thinking it should cost around $200 covered, but with CF we are looking at closer to ~$600 with holes, etc cut into it.

Oh, I see you are seeking to replace the entire console section. Me bad, I thought it was of a 2-piece construction. Never mind, count me out!

Back seats are gone in a sports car man. Ditch the console and store extras in the back seat area.
