Default Has or does anyone go without these?

Does anyone here go without the main hood insert/grill pieces? I took them off of my 2002 Firehawk to paint them.

The guy who had the car before me had poorly painted them red and I like the sunk back look, like a nostril kind of thing. So I painted the inside of the hood black again but never put the insert/grill pieces back on.

So anyhow, I am wondering if there is really a point to having these on. Other than keeping out some big *** bugs or protecting me from a leaf storm, they don't seem like they would do much anyhow.

I'd rather not see anything there so to me, it looks the best. I just don't wanna miss an important reason for these things to be on.

Thanks,
Ry

Do you have any straight on shots? I want to do it to my hood but I have some trimming to do for a straight shot to the filter.

About the Firehawk banner, there is an identical one on the rear window as well. They were on the car when I bought it so I don't know where they came from. I have thought about taking it off the front window, but never really decided.

It's borderline over doing it in my opinion, so maybe the front one will be removed, but it's not at the top of the list right now.

VERY carefully, lol.

They are held in with what I assume is a sort of 3M double sided tape material, or maybe a type of glue, just like the extractors on the top of the hood.

Basically you just need to find a good way to get in there, and just pry it off. With the heat extractors you can almost use your fingers, its quite easy, but with these it takes a bit more because they are set back in there.

I took a flat head screwdriver and stuck it inside the tiny honeycombs at the edges and then right into the layer of tape/glue and then gently pried... Did that kind of all the way around, and just kinda kept pulling at it. They both came out relatively easy and any tape/glue left stuck to the hood just pulled off (reminds me of rubber cement or somthing). Some residue might remain, I was able to just rub that off with my thumb.

The most importanting thing, rather a warning if you do this, is to be extremely careful with the screwdriver or whatever tool you use.

When you stick it into the layer of tape/glue, do it where the tape/glue touches the metal honeycomb piece, NOT where the tape/glue is attached to the hood.

When you are prying, and pulling at the pieces, be extremely conscious of slipping and pull toward you, not down or to the sides. On the second one, I slipped and dug a nice little inch long scratch into the top of the bumper. (thankfully I should be able to get it out with some heavy polishing)

So maybe set somthing down so if u do slip, you hit that and not ur paint job.

There's probably a better way of doing this but all in all it's not too bad, just work carefully.

This was the lovely spray paint job from the previous owner (kinda gives you a better idea of what's back there):

And after (can't see much of it unless you're right up in there):

(see the scratch??)

(scratch looks horrible here)
