Default Update with pics on new center console design

Hello everyone, here are some pics of the first center console out of the mold.....

For those of you that are not familiar:
This is a new center console designed to fit in the stock center console area. It is much lower profile and has space allocated for switches and up to 3 standard guages. We have been working on it for a while and finally have a first piece. Keep in mind these pics are a "test" piece. The hole above the airbag sensor is not going to be there and of course the console is not finished yet...it is just bare hand layed fiberglass in these pics....a better cut precision cut piece is on the way!! The cutouts on this piece are just for fitment.

Let me know what you guys think and pm me if you are interested, so I can start a list if need be. Other parts may be on there way in the near future....

Here is the link to my first post on the console

Now lets get the opinions coming. Some pics are with stock shifter on SLP base and the others are a Lou's Short Stick on a stock base. Shift boot area will be clearanced out to chrome plate.

I like the gauge panel idea, but I also like having an arm rest. Maybe you should go with that idea for the front, but keep an armrest/glovebox.

I second Tony's opinion. The gauge placement is great but for the street car population an arm rest/glove box is a must

Also, you should create a indention where the seatbelts near the console reside, this will prevent the seat from catching it and scratching the sides of the center console. Good ole' GM F-ed that one up.

One of the main reasons we did this was to get rid of the center glove box(junk collector). I know that all I use mine for is to collect junk... Another main goal was to make the console more low profile, to make it even with the top of the front seats. This will make the front seat area level from one side to the other.

The indentation idea is a good one that might be implemented in future plans. Keep in mind that this is the first piece made and was cut and fit very quickly. Even with a quick fitment it fits very tight and does not move even though it is not bolted in yet.

Thanks for the feedback guys...keep it coming.

Well I think the design as you have said is VERY crude... I am going to speak for I would think; 90% of the members here when I say you will need to implment an armrest. Where am I going to put my arm ... in my lap so I don't collect junk? If your neat and have some sort of self constraint then junk collecting shouldn't be an issue to the point where I need parts of my car removed.

If you can install a tri pod gauge to fit in the stock console I would buy it the same day!

Joe I like it!

Now that I I have an A3 Ratchet shifter I like it even more.

Only thing I would watch out for, is to make the lines not be too angular you don't want it to look like a console from a 66 Thunderbird... needs to have rounded edges etc.

I think the gauge part should come blank and folks can customize them, OR have angled sections that point the gauges up and to the left to the driver... Know what I mean?

In terms of the armrest, it might be possible to raise it up slightly for somewhat of an armrest, but one of the main points was to clear up the center section of the car.

PSJ:
The guages are actually angled towards the driver, I can get an exact degree measurement if you would like. All I know, is that when I sit in a comfortable driving position, I can read the guages easily and clearly. If people are interested in these they would come with either 1,2, or 3 guage cutouts and covered up with the finish material(cloth, vinyl, aluminum plate, etc...). I think when it is finished with trim the lines will be softened dramatically.

The basic idea would be to sell them either plain, meaning straight out of the mold, or completely finished, not including guages and nitrous switches etc... This is of course based on how much interest there is in the design.

The brake lever will be covered with a leather boot, and the shifter will be covered with a leather boot and with or without chrome trim.

The console seems to be at the perfect height for a Lou's Short Stick on a stock shift mechanism....

Thanks guys,
Joe

Dieso: If there is lots of interest I am sure something could be worked out to get one with a armrest area on it...

An idea to implement an arm rest would be to have it up high, and then waterfall down to the shifter as one solid piece, this would be a great place to mount switches IMO.

Also, are you doing one for the Auto crowd?

I think it would help quite a bit to see it with the leather boots on it, might give us a better picture of what it will look like finished.

As far as your work, looks great to me! Keep us posted.

Well I think to be successful you need to have two versions.. A race version similar to what you have there and a "cruiser" version that has a consol and arm rest. I know its a junk collector but you have to put that stuff somewhere and the armrest is comfortable.

I like the guage layout

Raise it up a little. the guys that auto x and road race need a higher console to help keep them from sliding into the passenger seat in a turn.

Granted, the center console pictured needs some serious work yet, but even in its current form it kicks the snot out of the stock console. I don't mind not having a box in the middle of my car to stuff junk in. And who needs an armrest? I've been auto X'ing w/o my center console for months now! I expect you will be finishing it with vinyl / leather? Can I have this thing customized when you're building it? How many of these things are you going to make?

Reminds me of my 3rdgen out in the barn.

I dont like it, but I am not your target audience, so I dont matter.

I HAVE to have an armrest, as I drive with my thumb and index finger (right hand) while on the highway, and fatigue would annoy me.

Nice job though, hope you make some money off these!

I like the guage installation but would also like to keep the arm rest. Would love to see your idea on that console when you do it.

Anybody want to send me a good pic or two of a Firebird center console? I imagine it would fit a firebird, but some pics and a test vehicle would help before I consider selling as fitting a firebird.

As of right now the Auto crowd will have to wait. We are testing on two six speed cars with different shifter set ups to check for clearance issues.

We will be working more on the console this weekend, but it probably will not be covered for a while, whether it be paint, leather, GM carpet, or vinyl.

Currently the only thing that will be available, pending interest, will be what is shown. A version with an armest and what not will be a ways down the road.

Stang Killer: I guess we did not think about the console holding you in on a turn that much. The primary purpose was to just clean up the center of the car. I guess if you wanted to be held in bad enough you could always go buy a race seat with good side bolstering. This is more of an appearance mod, than anything. Although it could help in shifting in an autoX race with the low profile it has.

DD966: To each their own.....I personally like it much better than stock, you may also when it is complete.

With enough interest the console will be sold with some customization available. Basically it will be available 1. plain straight out of the mold. 2. guage, shifter, brake cutouts. 3. complete.

This would be to simplify things.

Glitch: If there is enough interest, I imagine we could come up with many combinations in the future, in ragards to armrest, tranny configuration, brake cutout, etc....

Not great pics of the whole console, but they're showing off my mods, (sunfire ashtray delete, and Custom "nx" style switch panels that i make) and that is what i have online. Hope these help.
