Clay bar
Also, don't waste your time trying to wipe down the area you just clay bared. Just clay the whole car (if it dries...no big deal...all the dirt/impurities are in the clay bar....it's only dried out water/soap left on the car) and wash it again when you're done claying.
If you haven't already, get yourself a mild polish (over the counter meguiars products are ok) and use that before wax. Of course.....if you wanna get serious....get yourself a porter cable
. I recommend car wash water. It will break down the clay if you're too liberal with it, but I find it to be cheap and just as effective with moderation.

Dont move the clay bar in circles like waxing your car, just left and right
Also somthing that helps me, is keep a cup or small bucket of hot water to put the claybar in. It will looses it up and help you knead it with ease.
If you drop it on the ground just throw it out.
make sure your hands are clean very well before you use it.

Are you saying there are too many impurities in the detail spray?
You should use Detail spray as your clay lube, or a water/car wash soap mixture. (I prefer QD spray because it will not cause the clay to break down, which soapy water sometimes will)
you should never use plain water when doing any type of cleaning on your finish. Plain water provides absolutely no lubricity, and therefore no protection from any type of contaminent or particles that may be on the finish or the toewl/mitt you are using.
I use Meguiar's Detaily Spray for lubricant because I can get it locally and it's cheap. For a post-wax detail spray, I use the companion product of the wax (or sealant, in my case), I'm using.
