Default fixing steering wheel lights...

The lights have gone out for the volume control and seek functions on my 99 T/A steering wheel...are those easy to replace?

They aren't too bad but you have to remove the airbag and disconnect the connector for the steering wheel switch. The wires have very very little slack so be careful unplugging them. From there, I unsoldered the bulb and went to radio shack, found a new one and soldered it back in. I have to replace my right side one now. Sucks.

I did one without messing with the airbag. Even if you want to disable the airbag, there's no point in taking it out. Just remove the fuse

There are two write-ups listed in the Lighting FAQ:

I am just going to have to fix my lights on the steering wheel, even though I have an aftermarket system, they do look bad by not lightning up.

One question, I had a 1994 LT1 trans am that also needed the lights fixed on the steering wheel, it had the old style controls, the square ones. Did those steering wheels have the same type of bulbs?

I just replaced my lights yesterday.. the first one was kinda a pain till I figured out how to keep both holes hot that the wires are supposed to go through due to the solder kept hardening before I could get the wires through.. couldnt figure out how to get all the solder out of the holes. after a couple tries I figured it out. took bout 30 mins or so for the first one and 15 mins for the 2nd one. Total cost in parts.. $2 for the bulbs, $15 bucks for a soldering gun, $5 for some solder. Still helluva lot cheaper than buying whole new radio clusters just for bulbs.

The only complaint I have with this was the red caps. On the old bulbs they had a black shroud round the bottom of them to hold the red cap in place. the new bulbs dont have nothing like this, BUT if your careful and slide the cap on and put everything back together with out turning the cap upside down and install it back into the car it wont fall off. I had to end up taking the left side back apart due to the cap had fallen off and the lights lit up a orange instead of red.
