Default What to cover up when cleaning the engine bay? (Read sticky)

Hey guys. My car badly needs to be cleaned under the hood so im trying to get around to it but I'm a little lost as to what needs to be covered. I see some say that they cover the PCM, battery, MAF, TB, and fuse box. Some say they only cover the coil packs, and some say they just open the hood and let the water hose eat. Lol with all this stuff, I'm kinda lost as to what DOES need to be covered? I have had a few people tell me in person that the coil packs don't need to be sprayed, but then some on here don't mention about covering them. And I really don't have the extra cash right now to replace something that gets fried lol. What should I do? All help is appreciated

I cover the computer, coils, alt, intake, headers and fuses... I don't ever "spray" the engine down really and I pretty much cover the whole thing (3m plastic cover stuff)... the only time a hose is sprayed is to get the underside of the hood and maybe the inner fenders. Everything else gets hands on stuff..

We all know you don't cover things up (cough fuse box )

I'd most definitely cover the PCM and fuse boxes. Also be careful to not get much water on top of the intake manifold as it can seep thru the edges and rust under there.

Maybe this is a newb question but it probably wouldn't hurt if somebody posted pics of what they covered.

This is my process i've used for years on my Camaro without a single problem.

Start off with a cool engine-light spray down the engine bay.
Spray the engine bay with some Simple Green.
Use a rag or brush to reach those hard to reach area's and for better overall cleaning.
Lightly rinse down the engine bay.
Use a shop vac and put it on blower to get rid of water that collects in the hard to reach area's
Dry any remaining water with a rag.
Start up the car and let the engine warm up to make sure it is completely dry.
I don't cover up anything and i've never had a problem, just use common sense with the water hose.

I've heard bad stuff about simple green, that it eats through certain kinds of metal.
Anyway, I just cleaned my engine about a week ago. I covered the battery terminals, dipsticks, oil filler cap, stuff like that. I actually forgot to cover the fuse boxes, and the PCM. aluminum foil works well to cover stuff. And my car still runs fine. *knock on wood*
