We do some headlights up at work sometimes....we use 1500 and then go to 3000 grit. then finish them up with 3m extra cut compound. they turn out nice...I think a 1000 grit might have been to much.

use a buffer with some sort of compound, followed by a fine polish!

I think the write up on it was 400. 800 and 1600 grid paper wet sand. Then follow up with the Novus lens polish. Last time I just did a light sanding and followed it up with some blue gumby polish. It worked get. They're still clear. Of course its been in my garage for more than 2 months.
