Default Tire recommendation

Last night on a country road I decided to tryout WOT from about 25mph. The A4 downshifted to 1st. and the car took off normally. When it reached what feels like the powerband (wasn't watching the tach), she took off like a rocket and rear wheels broke loose, still in 1st. gear. I found it disconcerting loosing traction in this manner. Tried it again a couple times today and it is repeatable. Can anyone recommend a good "daily driver" tire with better traction than the stock goodyear rsa's? I'd appreciate hearing your opinions and about your experiences.

Thanks

How are the Nitto's in the rain? I have to deal with the Houston monsoons. Do you recommend replacing only the rears or all the way around?

They actually are not that bad...I have ridden in a friends car in the rain...they are good....but of course they won't hold when they are bald...

Just use common sense and don't hammer it while your turning in the rain....thats a way to put yourself into a curb...

I saw one guy in a vette at a car show do it...

Hey Chris, nittos will be fine in the rain. I have driven in the rain on mine before. But if you don't plan on racing much I wouldn't recommend them? You been out to the track yet?

Lynda,

Not planning on taking it to the track to race, just looking to upgrade the tires for better traction and handling.

FYI: I left that other place, it's become a big sandbox for the kids to play in .

What other place?

I wouldn;t recommend nittos then. Try these:

They seem to have good ratings.

Lynda,

Those tires are really inexpensive, only $86 a piece. I might be able to handle that . Thanks a bunch for the link.

Nitto's are great except for deep puddles or ponding on the road they can/will get you to hydroplane very easily, have heard the horror stories of 360's and totalled cars from using them in rain.

Mine are on now, they will be off before the heavy rains hit here in the summer.

Oh and BTW, I also have the new BF Goodrich Gforce KDW's (Killer dry wet) and they are excellent in rain. I have them on the front and this car cuts through water on the road better then the stock Eagle F'1's<--they suck regardless.

He doesn't need them, he doesn't do much racing if any at all. Those Kumhos are perfect for what he wants.

You're very welcome for the link.

I really appreciate all your opinions and recommendations. Lynda is correct, I really don't think I'll be racing, but, that doesn't mean I won't go down to HRP some night just to see what the car is capable of .

SZ50EP is an awesome tire since you won't be racing.Dunlop SP8000 is very good[avoid 9000].BFG Drag Radials are decent tires also.Tirerack has some good comparison tests, good luck!!!

I would have to go against a lot of this post and still recommend the Nittos. Living in Houston, they have done very well in the rain. I have the 315/35/17s DRs on the back and the non-DR 555 extreme 275/40/17s on the front. Actually, they hook and brake surprisingly well on wet roads, and the dry road grip is incredible for a street tire.

One down side - fat gripping tires do cut down the gas mileage somewhat. Be aware of that.

I have the regular Nitto 555's (non-DR's) on my SS, and they do really well for a "regular" radial. However, I'm getting ready to put a set of the DR's on the back for added traction. First gear is non-existent. FWIW, my rear tires are 275/40/ZR17's, and they have 5,000 miles on them. I'd be willing to let them go for a good price.

I have Bridgestone RE730's and they are way way better than stock in the rain, and have a cool looking tread pattern. Although at the track I can't cut better than a 2.2 60ft. That is purely driver error I'm sure.

I feel that Nitto DR's are maybe 90% as good as F1's in rain. Meaning I think they are very good in the rain. Just not good when it's really cold or if there is snow on the ground.
