Default Has anyone weighed all the carpet and insulation?

I am wondering what exactly the carpet and insulation weigh in the car? I might go to custom lightweight carpet when I do the cage soon.
Your help greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris

That's kinda funny, I just weighed mine down in the basement. Carpet weighed 40 lbs to begin with. After taking off the back, I weighed the backing, & came up with 12 lbs worth of crap. So I'm at 28 lbs now. I believe that with the right lightweight carpet, I can get the total weight down to 15 lbs. If it works out, I may make up some to sell. I'll keep you posted.

40lbs sounds about right. I replaced my interior carpet with an aftermarket one, it was much lighter and devoid of insulation (loud). But I don't know about getting it down to 15lbs. The insulation weighs nothing, but the factory carpet is pretty thick and heavy so I guess its possible. Now I wish I weighed it.

I think Angie and BeaSSt used Orlon to replace their carpet. its light, single layer, and stretches a bit. may be a good alternative to laying back down the carpet after tearing out the padding.

I know of a place in WI that sells aftermarket carpet with a thinner underpadding and it weighs about 10 lbs. I did not get it yet since it's $190 and I felt that I should shop around what do you guys think?

PSJ,
What I am thinking about doing when I do the cage is to remove all the carpet and insulation etc. Use nice large floormats in the car and then use the back half of the carpet from the back of the backseat to the trunk. That way I can remove it all at the track without issue. I am not sure how it is going to look but it'll save me 40 pounds. If I need to put the carpet back in again for what ever reason it will be in 2 pieces instead of one behind the back seat

I've seen camaro carpet sets vary by 4 lbs or so. The carpet in my bird weighed 42 lbs on a certified scale. I replaced it with a 5lb carpet with no backing. Its cheap azz **** but it looks ok. It wears terribly though so it will probably be upgraded to a thicker carpet next year.

Anybody got a contact for cheaper carpet?

I couldn't bring myself to almost spend $200 on carpet.

Great idea Chris! The carpet and padding are very heavy. If you can find a way to easily remove at the track you'll have the best of both worlds. be advised that when you remove everything that you will have the scary sensation of hearing everything in the drive train. It can drive you crazy hearing things that you are not used to hearing. And even the things that you are used to hearing are amplified.
Good Luck,
Chuck

Thanks Chuck
I think I am going to figure out a way to do this all with it being removable at the track. (Still include the front carpeting somehow. I will post pics when I figure it out
Thanks again,
Chris

That sounds like a pretty good price actually, I spent about $320 for mine. I got a special red with matching Z28 emroidered floormats though. Usually I think its just $250. They actually want $450 for Covette Torch Red, which I haven't brought myself to yet. I think thats overkill.

I really think the hot ticket is taking the carpet out all together, painting the inside with a grey/tan rubborized paint (like the wheel well paint), and leaving the back seats and floormats in.

I did !carpet in my '93 awhile back, the only downside is your car becomes louder inside, and it looks ghetto.

Actually, with the ruberized padding that I still had around the shifter, my total carpet weighed 42 lbs. Right now, with everything removed, I have the stock carpet down to 25 lbs. Putting the rollbar in right now, & I am going to cut the carpet just in back of whre the back seats bolt in. I'll get some border tape & glue in around the edges. The only part that will be visable will be on the hump. Then I can remove it when going to the track. This would cut it down less than 50%, so stock carpet down to around 12 lbs, and the only $ spent was on the border.. Not bad. 30 lbs lost..
