Default Shift kit

I was going to do a shift kit the same time i did my torque converter. Well I'm not sure when ill have those funds so I thought i might drop the tranny when i do my cats and motor mounts this weekend. My question is, is it really hard to do a shift kit? I have read before you have to do some grinding on a part. Is that as hard as it gets? If I grab a manual and take my time could it be done my someone mechanically incline just lack of experience
