Default Flexplate wobble...

Guys,

I was under the car while I had it running the other day. I was hunting down an oil leak.

I was looking at the flexplate and it appears to be 'wobbling' quite a bit...a lot more then I think that it should. How much wobble (if any) is normal.

Thanks,

Scott

When driving the car do you get a serious vibration over like 50mph??

My whole car shakes and I can't make out images in the mirror due to this vibration, I'm trying to hunt it down, but I don't feel its safe to make a 130+ pass down the 1/4..

Yep,

That is pretty much what I am seeing. Take a look at the flexplate under the car while it is running. I have a pretty significant 'wobble', but this is the first auto car that I have ever owned...so I am not too sure what is normal.

Mine has a horrible wobble as well. When i put the car on the lift with someone cranking it, you can see the flex plate has a ton of wobble in it.

I think mine happened from running washers between converter/tranny for spacers when i put a th350 in...

Im going to change the flexplate as it causes ALOT of vibration in the car.

Every post that I have read using the search seems to say that rotating the TC might fix the issue. I will try rotating the converter tonight.

I have a shim installed in the crank that the snout of the converter fits in to center it, but I am not sure if I should try spacing it out or from the flexplate with washers or not. How do you know how far from the flyweheel the converter needs to be shimmed?

Just FYI, I am using a big 12" converter, it is a switch pitch design, so I know that the vibration isn't due to it being a lightweight racing converter.

Thanks,

I just got off the phone with my trans guy. He said that I should shim the converter and gave me some pointers, I am going to try it tonight and see if it fixes my problem.

Thanks,

Scott, A little flexplate wobble is normal (up to .030"). I prefer .010" or less. If you want to check your flexplate runout, you can simply unbolt your torque converter and get a visual idea of what's going on. Ideally you'd want to install a dial indicator on the flexplate and spin the engine over, although there's usually not enough room to do that with the transmission in place. The converter can also cause the flexplate to have runout. If your flexplate is not the problem, then your converter will be the problem. It may have excessive runout. It may be necessary for you to replace both the converter and the flexplate.

Thanks for the info Kevin.

I have a 1/2 day at work today, so I plan on getting this done today. I have a TCI flexplate sitting here that I was going to use with my new 404ci motor when that goes in, so it might get some action a little earlier then expected!

If I end up having to go with a new converter then Neil Chance here I come...

I tossed a few shims between the flexplate and the converter and everything seems to be perfect now...no wobble like before!!!

I am going to take the car outl later tonight and see if the vibration is gone, but my bet is that it will be.

Thanks again for all of the help!

Scott
