WTF did i break?

WTF did i break? I went out last night and heading home about 2:30am, i was acceleterating up to 40mph, and all of a sudden the motor just start spinning freely. tried taking the car out of D and going 3,2,1, and nothing. I coasted it off to the side, and turned it off. turned it back on, tried all of the gears including reverse, and nothing moved the car, it just ran. Had it towed to my mechanic at 4am, and he called me around 1pm and said something broke loose inside. He has to pull it apart on monday. any guesses as to what could it be? Did the converter blow up? Before the car did this, at stops signs and lights or in park, it sounded like there was a helicopter propeller was inside my trans tunnel.
It will really depend on what is broke to determine that. If a pump is broke IMO the trans should be completely torn down to clean any and all metal from the unit. If it is a hard part the unit will definitely need to be rebuilt. Feel free to give us a call next week to discuss your options. Just a heads up we are located in Wood Dale which is pretty close to you. Let us know. Vince

****...am i better off just pulling the trans, getting one of the rebuild kits, and going from there? the rebuild kits with upgraded parts are like 700 bucks...i don't have 1500-2500 to drop on a whole built trans

Verdad Gallardo In either case the converter will need to be cut and cleaned. I'm sure it is going to have metal in it. Hell at this point we need to find out what failed. IIRC that is a TCI in your car? That might be the problem in it self. Vince

is it possible that i just blew up the converter? the trans had no signs of slipping or anything at all. yes, it is a TCI...do u guys cut and clean converters?

i would say maybe your final drive blew apart or your pump went out. but it sounds like ur pump. maybe the ears on ur pump got damaged when the converter was installed. i did that on a customers car and i had to buy a pump. costly mistake
We do not do that here. We would normally recommend that you send it back to the manufacturer. I did see on FTI's web site that they offer a service for this on any converter. Might be something to consider or just get a new converter. Vince

i found an APT built trans for sale on CTR. guy wants 700 for the trans with a converter...i don't want the converter though...i'm gonna look around some more for more trans...i'll get a new converter if i rebuild my trans. can u put together a list of parts i'd need for a rebuild and how much? the rebuild kit from 700r4l60e.com is like 643 for everything
They are a fairly new sponsor here that offer this service located in Florida I believe. Greg is the owner and is a stand up guy. I have one of their converters at the shop for a build we are doing. Looks like a very nice converter.
I really have not used any of them. The only one I'm aware of that has been in one of my units came back with a broken hub. Personally I would look into one of the converters listed on our site and you could probably add FTI to that list. Vince
