Default 4l80e dipstick question

the only thing i have left is make up a dipstick for my chevelle-i was wondering if a turbo 400 would have the same fill level as a 4l80e-i was wondering where the fill mark is in relation to the rib on the 4l80e tube, that would give me an idea of the level if i modified a 400 tube

They are different lenght sticks and tubes. You should buy a matching stick and tube for the 4l80e. If you want to modify what you have the top of the hot full grid is usually set to split between the pan case.

even with the Lokar, you still need to know the orig fill level, right? years ago i had a lokar, it popped out of the trans(i think it just had an o ring, nothing else to hold it in) i would prefer a steel tube, cut and mod it to fit

Again to accurately determine the correct level, it all depends on the relationship of the oil level to the rotating parts of transmission. So when you put the stick in the fill tube, no matter who built it, the split line of the transmission case to pan is what dictates the level.

I've got the long Lokar dipstick and it's tough to get a good fluid level reading, probably because so much of the tube is horizontal and there must be fluid sitting in there screwing up the reading.

I'll probably end up going under there, pulling it out of the trani and reading it directly.

$90....

i picked up a tube/gauge this morn from my buddy @ the chev dealer for a truck w/4l80e
your right, the fill mark is just about the top of the pan, maybe a little more
it doesnt fit my body, but it will when im done-i meas the amount of stick out past the tube, so when i end up cutting it i will make sure the same amount sticks out and it will read correct
i remember when i had a lokar, i think i roughed up the plastic didstick so oil would stick to it, and give me a reading-that little fill tube they give you is a pita to fill, as i remember i cut groves in the outside to let air out so it would drain faster-i just prefer the metal tube
ordered my driveshaft today, pick it up tomorrow, then see if i still know how to put a trans back together, lol

Plus, the full mark is indicated while the engine is running , when the engine is off the fluid drains back in the pan and rises back up in the dip stick tub.

i'll have to ck-it was for a 2004 truck, all i did was cut the first few inches off the tube, cut the stick to match and weld it back together, then cut the tube mount off, fit the chevelle perfect-i had a bracket on the engine to hold the 400 tube, so just reused it-only took about 45 mins and i was done
i cut a little off the bottom of the tube where it went into the trans, helps on the install, it was pretty long anyway

the GM # i used was 15183801 for the ind, 15832205 for the tube-i cut a few inches off the top where it curved, and the same amount off the ind.
maybe what you have would work better, but this is what i did-its a bitch welding the ind, spring steel, lol

my 80e is getting rebuilt right now. I have the flexible Lokar dipstick that looks to be made out of stainless braided line. I couldn't tell for **** how much fluid was in it before the tranny came out let alone now. Does anyone know how to read this thing? It is mounted on the firewall like you guys say is right. I am going to order 16 qt's of fluid since I have a big cooler on the car. A lot of the diesel guys say it take about 14.5 qts to fill the tranny and converter so thats why I picked 16 qts and its 4 gallons.
