Default Yank Converter

Hey guys, I got a 1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula automatic with 2.73 gears, but I was wondering what the highest stall converter I could install on my car. I'm planning on installing american racing headers, upgraded suspension, a Fast Intake & a Thunder Racing head and cam package. I already got a GMMG catback exhaust, SLP air lid with an SLP mass air flow sensor. A weekend driver for a cruise around the city, not a daily driver.

If you do all those mods, you're going to want a 4000+ to maximize your setup. I'm not sure that 2.73's are going to be a good option with a setup like that. You might look into swapping in 3.73's or possibly 3.90's. As for the converter, if you can afford the gear change, Yank's PT series are awesome converters for NA applications. It would be awful loose though with the stock 2.73's. If you're set on keeping the gears, I personally wouldn't run any more than a 3600ish.

My car originally had 2:73 and I ran a Yank Stl3200, it would hit hard to help get of the hole. If your planning to stay with the 2:73's? I would suggest SS3600, but give them a call and discuss your set up and possible future goals.

If you are sticking with a 2.73 gear ratio I wouldn't go with the SS3600. It will be too much stall for that ratio. I would rec the 3000 if you stick with 2.73. Personally, I would put on 3.73's and do the SS3600. Call Dave at Yank if you need more info

^^^Plenty of folks run the SS3600 with 2.73's. The SS series converters are pretty tight for their stall speed. A 3000 would leave so much on the table with an LS1. Some run small converters like that, but the vast majority end up swapping in something bigger pretty quickly. If he's going to run more gear, than the SS4000 or PT would be a great choice. I run the PT4400 with 3.23's, and while it's somewhat loose, it's not bad at all.

Yeah I'm sure there's folks out there that don't mind running that gear ratio w/ the ss3600 but there's been a few that have also disliked the feeling of that particular set up. 3.73's would really make it a better performer IMO and give it a overall better feel.
