Default 700r4 4x4

Okay, It will not shift out of first, Changed the tranny fluid to see if that woul help. The fluid was rather thick for tranny fluid and was darker then normal.

What could be my issue?

Stock gears and taller than stock tires.

How long has the truck been together? Any recent changes?
Specs on truck, tire size? engine? gearing? model? ETC.

I believe there is 3.73 in the rear end and front, The truck is 4x4 with 35in tires. The truck has that size tires since i could remember, Never had the problem until just about two weeks ago it started having problems shifting into second unless I got the rpms up to like 4k and let off the gas.
I know I should of stopped driving it but I have to get to work lol and I do not have 800 for a brand new tranny.
It has a SBC 350, Z71 C1500, Lift 9ins Full exhaust from header back, no cat's, Loud gear drive, K&N fliter, New engine with about 11k on it and the Truck only have 127,000 on it and its a 1990. single cab not a step side. and I never take it off road and normally I'm pretty good with changing fluids so that's Why i was thinking it was a governer. But no clue how to check.

Only reason I change the engine is because the block cracked when it was out in the cold because the dumbass that was painting it left it out in the -20 degree weather and forgot to drain the fluids like he said he was going too..

I don't know. Just my opinion those tires are hell on the trans, 3.73's aren't too bad, but 700R4's have a hard enough time living in stock trucks.
Sounds like time for a rebuild. The governor gear being bad would keep it in 1st. The governor valve sticking is a sign of debris from worn parts flowing in the fluid.

Heres a truck I bought and finished, it had 35x14.50's on it with 3.42 gears, 4.3 vortec, 4L60E. I put 4.56's in the Dana 30 front and the ford 8.8 rear just to get the rpm close to what they were with the stock tire size. It drove ok with the 3.42's but I know it wouldn't have for long.

You want to get one for a 4x4 or else you'll be tearing it down to swap tailshafts.
Basically any 4x4 with either a small block or 4.3 bellhousing.
The newer year the better, but not new enough to be a 4L60E obviously.
I'd try for 1990 up. If you had to '87 and up would work too. As a last resort you could go down to '84 1/2, I wouldn't touch one older than that.

You will want to get a 1987 or newer, I would not waste the time with anything older. Also the 4x4 bell housing has M10 bolts for the Dust shield. This shield is designed to help support the case in 4x4 applications. Your initial problem could be a bad TV cable or stuck TV valve. pull on the cable at the carb and verify that it move freely and that the cable return to it original position. Verify the adjustment also.

Check the TV cable with the motor running and see if it lightly tugs back. Technically, it should have slight pressure and then a little more pressure when you lightly tug on it, fully. Your governor could be stuck or apple cored, (stripped). We like to install 4.10's with 35" tires. It's like 3.73's with 30"-31" tires-stock. The problem with the 700 is it is calibrated to the original diff ratio, and if you get a used one , you won't know what it's out of, (result is early or late shifts). If you're wheeling, you should have it done right. Trucks like that aren't only for show. LOL!!
