Did you use the TCI crank spacer?

The crank spacer. I edited my prior post because the original picture host is obviously a POS.

I'm pretty certain this spacer is necessary.

I have the LS1 TCI flexplate. I had a a 9" converter in there before, and the holes in the converter were 1/2" fine thread. So I got 1/2" fine bolts, about 1.25" long, and they worked fine. No clearance issues. The heads on these bolts take a 3/4" socket and the hex portion is .330" tall. So they are pretty big. Like there was just barely enough room in the recess on the flexplate. Like I said no issues even with bolts this big, but that was also the small bolt pattern on the flexplate. The LS1 pattern is larger. You must have a bolt or something that is out on the back engine cover. They did come out with a new cover that has the bolts recessed closer the the block.
I really don't think you need that spacer, or if that is even a TCI piece. My flexplate did come with a pilot spacer, but that is for A3 transmissions with a non LS1 converter, not what is shown in the picture

they sent a pilot spacer, but it said it wasnt for the ls1.

I havnt heard anything about a crank spacer. Nothing on speedinc where I purchased the flexplate either. Or from anybody else that put one in.

im regretting this flexplate.

After stretching out the bolt holes in my stock flexplate I switched to a TCI flexplate a couple of years ago and have no problems with it. No spacer is used in the 4L60E/LS1 application. I asked about the ARP converter bolts because the head of the bolt sits too high when used with a TCI plate and will nick the the oil pan causing a rapid ticking noise like you mention. Regardless of the bolt used; you need to check the clearance by rotating the engine by hand.

What kind of bolts does tci expect people to use. These are standard metric bolts. They really are not that big

I'm not going to say that either you or TCI is incorrect about this, but I helped a friend install an LS1 into a Malibu a few years ago, and god knows why he chose a TCI flexplate . That particular LS1 engine and 4L60E trans required a shim to:

1. Clear the converter bolts from the engine.
2. Obtain the proper torque converter engagement depth.
3. Properly align the starter to the flexplate.

i haven't heard of any problems with the tci flexplate. most just get 20mm length bolts from what i read. i have a tendency to buy expensive **** so i bought a meziere flexplate. there are no welds on it and it is a nice looking piece. who knows if it is actually worth the $400 price tag. i didn't get any abnormal vibrations after my trans, stall, and flexplate install so that is a good thing. i have been reading a lot about this lately and i was a bit scared before my initial drive to tell you the truth.

You need to check the back of the engine to see where the interference is.
Now that I think about it, I had a large bolt pattern converter in there a couple of weeks ago, with grade 8 7/16" bolts, and again no issues. There has to be something on the back of your block that is backed out or loose or something.

i dont see how that could have happend though. im sure its just this tci sitting stupidly close to the block. its a flat design, where as the stock design bows out towards the trans and the bolts sit inside the lip of the starter ring. im going to be taking it all apart here pretty soon. Im pretty set on getting a flexplate that follows the stock design. I would put the stocker back in, but I pryed on it a little bit getting the trans off so im not sure if i damaged it or not.

I know for a fact my buddy and I got the TCI plates at the same time. I run the LQ9 iron block and TH400, he has an 02 with aluminum LS1 block and 4L60E with no issues.
It is your car that has the problem.

One thing that has not been mentioned but is possible, Excessive crank shaft thrust bearing end play.
I am not sure how you would check this acuratley in the car,
Have you spoken to TCI about the issue yet?
