Default 4l80e Question

I have a 99 ta will a failing A4 (4l60e). Since I need to buy a stall anyway, I would like to upgrade to a 4l80e. What years can be used? Any to stay way from?

I also know I need a new crossmember and a wiring harness adapter. Anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks guys....

You'll need a lokar flexible dipstick (the longer one). A new SFI approved flexplate and ARP bolts are a good idea while you're in there too. Also, you'll need the computer reflashed with your file mated to a 4L80E file. Check with Frost (lsxtune.com) about the tuning and harness. He knows what he's doing and does great work.

You will also need a new slip yoke for the 80e. Which one will depend on the tailshaft on the 80 you end up picking up. Tranny cooler is a must too with a stall. You'll need some other odds and ends too like when you extend your tranny cooler lines. You can either cut the existing ones and extend them with the proper rated hose and clamps or switch to AN fittings. I used the hose and haven't had any issues.

In my opinion it is well worth the swap just for the peace of mind. I've never trusted the 60 myself. I've been through a couple of them over the years. If I think of anything else I'll post it up. There are a few threads floating around about the install too. Check them out when you get a chance.

Thank you for your post. I forgot totally about the yoke and dipstick.

Only thing I am still unsure of then is what year 4l80e's can I use with my 99 ECM. Does it even matter? I thought I read to stay away from some of the earlier 4l80e's, but I am not sure what year ranges I really need then.

Thanks again...

93 to current year all can be used by the 99 PCM (with a reflash and a little bit of wiring).

Nope, the 98 OS is all in 1 piece, whereas 99+ are segmented (so you can swap in a 4L80E transmission segment from a truck). You must use a 99+ OS/PCM/Wiring (or buy the aftermarket Tranny controller, or go FMVB).

If you repin your harness, it will just cost you a computer. Do a search in the PCM section, it has been done lots of times.

Ive seen alot of 4l80e's with a u-joint type output shaft on them. Are they all like that ? Is there a replacement output shaft that would fix that problem if you got one of those trannys ? How much is a normal performance rebuild usually ? Thanks

Thank you slow67. This is was the last part I was looking for. The hunt for a 4l80e now begins

Would a harness from a 99-up work?
I'm swaping in a 6.0 in it anyway, so it won't be hard to swap harnesses right?

Wiring is my major down fall. don't know much about it.

Thanks for the help.
