I'd look into a 4L80E but you need a trans controller and I'd say it will cost about $K when it's done.

But if I were to take out my new T400 it would be for a 4L80E.
you don't need a trans controller if you put in a manual valve body

the newer built 4l60e upgraded with the 4l65e sungears and clutchs will hold do the research
Stock 4l65e are equal to the 4l80e.. the new 4l80e is 4l85e.. the 65 and 85 are a giant step foward for both. you wouldn't want a 4l80e or 85e due to the first gear. there was a lot of good info on LS1.com might want ot do a search over there if you can't find any info here or email me and i can hook you up with some vendors

4L80E and 4L65E cannot be a 1:1 comparison you also have to look at how the clutches and bands are setup.

The 4L80E is like a T400, you don't have simultaneous clutch/declutch/band/disengage band actions going on.

GM rates redline of 4L65E trannies at 5500 rpms and 6200 for 4L60Es. The 5 pinion planetary gearsets do not like to rpm. Something to think about for heads/cam cars. Also, the holding capacity of the 4L65E is nowhere close to the 4L80E...not by a long shot.

Cool

i have seen the Dyno work in person. Do your own research and speak with the people that have been building them and i am sure you will be surprised. There are a lot of poeple that will be upset since they have changed to a TH400 and lost there O/D and now all they need is a 4L65 type( And when i say "type" thats not using the GM clutchs and using one of the 3 companies that io know f that Make aftermarket Clutchs and dont just use dye to change the way the clutchs look).. Kinda reminds me when People us to say the Fuel Injection sucked and Carb was the only way to make power. So the the those that think TH350's and TH400's are the only way , Good Luck and best wishes ..............Some old dogs can't learn new tricks...

A built 4L60E will handle 700 rwhp, if you freshen it every year.

The 4L65E is a nice trans, no doubt.

But it's not better than a reworked FLP level IV for example. Chuck upgrades a lot of hard parts in his level IV's. I hear he even does a level V now.

Now, I loved my Level IV, but I was concerned about trying to get a whole season of racing out of a built 4L6XX with 700-800 hp so I went to a T400.

My feeling was that I was going to have to freshen the 4L6XX twice a year. But I'm gonna do 7000 rpms, run 28" slicks, and cut high 1.3's at the track, and hopefully make 750 ft lbs of tq...

I'd go T400 or try a 4L80E. Maybe Patrick can post about some of the inherent shortcomings of a 4L6XX tranny with the band/clutch setup.

Don't get me wrong, I went 1.4's, 7200 rpms with my level IV, with 28" slicks for two years... Maybe 150 passes on it, and like 30 dyno pulls. GOOD STUFF.

IMO if someone wants to go ALL OUT race then they dont plan on any long nice trips and dont need an O/D tranny and would rather have a TH350 TH400 or PG. But IMO if someone was a Weekend Warrior a nicely build 4l6x is gonna do the trick nicely and still turn blistering E.T's... just my belly button... everyone has an opinon

what is the first gear in the 80? is it higher or lower? personally i would rather have a taller first gear so i could use a harder hitting converter and steeper rear gears without spinning and be able to spin first gear to a higher mph

3.70 gear, T400, and 28" drag radial and I'm on the highway listening to the stereo too.

FLP in John Lawson's NA vette=10 runs and 6 dyno pulls and the tranny started to slip. He went with a Rossler and has made at least 50 runs along with a dozen dyno pulls and the tranny shows no sign of getting weaker. He also cut about 3 tenths off his ET when he went with the Rossler. Carl Rossler and gang know thier stuff.

Weight is a big issue. I had great luck with a 3400+ lb car using a 200-4r. After that, I had it rebuilt, brought the weight down(3205) and changed the engine entirely to one making just at 500rwhp and it never skipped a beat as a daily driver. I was impressed that it could handle that much power(over 600fwhp), but it did. That 200 was built by Art Carr in 1997. I still have it, but it's no longer in use. It's by far the best A4 I've ever experienced personally.

That would be absolutely fantastic for the money...about $1000 less than other top of the line 4l60E...I would love to hear how these are actually holding up and what kind of warranty they give...I will still go with Rossler, but damn, for $1800 with a converter is a fantastic price, just don't see how they can do it. Anyone have on of these?
