That's exactly the type of info I was looking for. You have people saying shouldn't be that different for a stalled auto and others saying can't even use the dyno numbers except for tuning. If the people who build convertors are saying there's a huge discrepency than that's all I need to hear.
That's what I love about the forum, instead of people arguing and no information being exchanged you get great info.

I dynoed my Nova the other day to see what My converter was flashing to and with
31x13x15 m/t slicks at 11.5psi it dynoed 357rwhp . I tuned it at the track and when on the dyno every thing we did lost hp. Went back to my track tune and redynoed after a lunch break to find 322 rwhp.
I scratched my head along with Geoff at Engine power systems and then found one of my slicks had leaked down to almost flat . It was on the passenger side so we did not see it at first.
After adding air up to 15 psi, I dynoed 389 rwhp. That much increase from 3.5 psi in tires. This was through a 8" converter th350 , 347 c.i Ls1 with 11.63/1 compression.
My converter is only flashing to 4200 when I need a 5500 and I have 14.8% slip in my converter. This motor could see 475 or so with a 6 spd. best time at the track though is 10.68 with crappy 1.53 60 ft. I am sending the converter back to bte to get restalled and set up for my combo.

My car dynoed 330rwhp, I was at the track and decided to run it, it's a convertible without a cage I was told not to run faster than 13.49 I launched the car spun to almost half track, the kind of spinning where the car is accelerating but you feel the car moving around, car really started pulling in the middle, coasted the last couple hundred feet and ran 13.1 @105 2.36 60ft.
running 8lbs boost, 3200 stall, 3.73 gears.

when my car was bolt ons, VIG3600, stock internal i dynoed 366/399, and the ran an 11.8@118 at hallsville raceway in texas during the summer. i've never been worried about dyno #'s, car next to me might make 420/395 i'll shrug it off and walk the opposing car by 3 lengths.
Here is a perfect example. Our bracket C5 with a FTI 4000 dynos 340 RWHP, but runs 11 flat in good air. Greg has it right, use the dyno to get the tune right & hit the track for the real results. I usually estimate a 30-35% percent reduction on a good loose TC on the dyno from the actual flywheel. We had a 8-71 blown pro street on the other day that dynoed over 1000 on the engine dyno, and only 720 on the chassis dyno through a 5000 stall.
to all ya'll stalled A4 guys like myself dont get too caught up on the dyno numbers..TAKE IT TO THE TRACK THATS WHERE OUR CARS SHINE!!!!!!
P.S WISH ME LUCK GUYS DOING MY THIRD TOUR IN IRAQ AGAIN...
infantry leads the way baby!!!!!

Can someone tell me if it's a bad thing to lock the converter on the dyno? It should be kept unlocked correct?

WS6racer stay safe, over half of my car buddies are military and it really hits home when they get deployed.
allbaugh unless it's a convertor designed to be locked at wot don't do it. Lock up clutches are notrious for being weak.

We have had many people do it however with both our billet and non billet converter and have not had it fail. But IMO if you dont have a multi disc converter its not a real good idea.

Can anyone answer me why anyone cares about dyno numbers? It doesn't show how fast the car is in real life and anyone can manipulate dyno numbers. The time is what matters either on a straight track or one with turns. If you want a dyno number go ahead and dyno a Semitruck motor.
