Default How 2 make 4l60e last longer?

Hi,

I see the stock 4l60e tranny is a weak spot when adding extra hp, and that for some it lasts well, others not so much.

Is there a way to 'beef up' my stock tranny, affordably for the home mechanic, without a full tranny swap?

The A4 tranny looks complicated scary, and I don't really want to rip into it.
I just wondered if there is an easy couple of parts to swap out that are worth doing, to make it a bit more sturdy.

Thanks for the advise......

So I guess there's no hope for the stock tranny?
No easy upgrade that will make it last a little longer?

Okay, thanks for the advise.
I guess I may just cross my fingers, I'm possably going to eventually spray or TC &/or cam.
If the worst happens I'll do the upgrade to a 4l80e/4l85e.

I live in the UK, so getting work done by rossler isn't going to happen
There are a few tranny specialist around here, but I know they won't be cheap.

Just a shame I can't take a couple of preventative measures.

no not a must do but it would not hurt to seperate trans cooling from eng cooling.4l60e are good the just cant take the abuse as will.they are an extension of the shity 700r4 which was first put behind the 2.8/4.3 in s-10,s in the early 80,s.if you are not going to race your car i would not worry just maintain your 4l60e .

No, I don't really race this car, I've just herd about some of it's weaknesses, and wondered if there was a budget way to help curb some of the problems.

Thanks again for all your help,
Kind regards,

Paul.

Put a quality cooler on it, such as a B&M. Nothing will cure a 4L60e, but keeping it cool will help. A B&M 70264 would be a good solution, for example.

the thing that is good for a 4l60e on gas is to have your aaa card ready .

If I run N2O, I will use a progressive controller to help reduce the shock on the tranny and rear end.

streetassasin, did you use a progressive controller with your N2O?
Also, how big of a shot kill your tranny?

I guess aaa card is a recovery company? lol

the best way to make the 60E stronger is to save up $2,000 and have one of the great tranny sponsor we have on this site build one properly for you and done correctly the first time.

Good advise however it sounds like the OP does not have the funds for that. I would look into installing a transgo shift kit, a new separator plate and get aluminum accumulator pistons for the forward and the 1-2 accumulators. These will help fix a couple issues without removing the transmission itself. Or just run it until she blows and get in touch with one of the sponsors.

BTW LOL at the AAA comment. Vince

Thanks for all the input.
I'll look into those parts Vince, your right, I've not really got tonne of money I'm willing to dump into this ATM.
I'm not running slicks, but I may get 10" in the back eventually with newer tyres if the Konis don't sort out some of my traction issues.......

Man... In my experience there is no good reason to NOT have a transcooler on your system. PERIOD. After that, chage the fluid and filter every third or fourth oil change and except for the advice on the basic mechanical gear above (which I have NO idea about) as a general operator, that's about the only defense that ya have. Keeping you system cool and it got my stock 4l60E through two years of HARD racing. (I had that unit 'rebuilt' when I bought the car... with what was described to me as 'heavy duty clutches' etc... the word "Corvette" was used a LOT... )

I made nearly every Friday night 1/8th mile heads up and ran 20 or more passes every outing, with numerous bracket races on many a Saturday... And that was progressing from mid 9s to the mid-high 7s...

One note... the trans AND the stock posi hit the skids the second night after I bolted up the spray and that is only a 50 shot.

So if you're not where you can get Frank at Performabuilt Trannies to send ya Level 2... best tread with caution on squeezin' the juice. 'turns out that it can be kinda hard on ya.

Your welcome. If you ever need us let me know. As mentioned above a trans cooler is a must along with the parts I mentioned. Vince
