A shift kit and/or trans cooler can be installed without pulling the transmission. Trans cooler might be a good idea. You can put the converter in and then decide if you want the shift kit if you wanted. I liked what the shift kit did for my car after I had the converter in it, but my stock trans pump got nuked shortly after and I changed to an aftermarket trans.

The tranny cooler is a "must". Its cheap insurance, I ran a 3200 stall on by SS with no shift kit and i was happy with the results!
