Default Alright guys need suggestions on converter

im gong to be picking up a 98 A4 LS1 shortly. im for sure going to add a stall going to keep it just bolt ons. So my stall can go above 3600. Im trying to decide between the 4000 PI OR the 4000 yank. any input is appericated. I have seen up to a WHOLE second gain with the yank. other supporting mods would be pacesetters, 3.73 lid, shift kit and UMI arms. would really like to break the 11 second mark but low 12's is fine!!

How about a Circle D, I hear they build great stuff. I would suggest 3600+ like you mentioned. We have 2 options for you. First is our 4C, it would stall right at 3600-3700. This would my choice for street manors and great performance. It will hit the tires hard, but nothing a good set of tires can't handle. The second option is the 5C, stall 4000-4200. It still has nice street manors, but will hit much harder at the track, could be a problem getting it to hook at some tracks. Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions or shoot me a PM. Good luck with the 11's!

The fallacy of the torque converter debate rages. Your torque converter should be picked to optimize your torque and horsepower curves, along with the weight of the car, suspension setup, and tire choice. Furthermore, you also have to weigh in the STR ratio and stall in terms of driveability and usage of the vehicle.

If you are staying pretty much bolt ons right now, I think I would stay in the 3200-3400 range at most. With just bolt-ons, you make a broad range of power and torque, so you want to make sure you don't short change the torque curve.

Lets look at two identical cars, one with a big stall (4000) and one that is a 3200 stall

Notice the torque curve below each of their stall speeds. The 4K stall basically is flat, because you are past your torque peak and it is pretty flat after that. The lower speed stall was a quicker car, and was a lot more fun to drive.

I also have 2 friends, one with a 2800 converter and one with an ss4000. Both cars ran identical times within 3 minutes of ech other. All of their other mods are identical.

Well put as this is why we custom build each converter to the customers specs. The shape of the stator blade, the number of blades and the position of the statot in relation to the turbine and impeller all pay a huge role. The blade angle and count on the impeller also play into the equation. Food for thoght when purchasing a converter.
