if you dont care about gas mileage, then do it. but i wouldnt w/out a stall first. i have a ss4000 w/ 4.11s and at 70 in overdrive, my rpms is right at 2500-2600. but i like being fast more than mpg. i'm just cam only and roast my 315/30/18 mt drs. i may later on down the road go with 3.73, but i like my 4.11's too much right now.

Relistically in a stock car you might gain a tenth at the track, since you already have 3.23's.
For some people gas mileage is important, dropping like 30% off your gas mileage can be a big factor for most. Never mind the motor always sitting up at higher rpms. more rpms, more wear and tear, lower motor life, etc.
If you only drive 40 miles a week it would have been relavant to say so in the beginning. For a toy or a weekend warrior put whatever in you want, but like said earlier I think the 3.42's are a great match for an A4 street car.
If your gonna race the car with 4.10's and a 26" tire your gonna be limited at about 116mph at 6200rpms. So think about that, you'd probably top out on a 100shot or anything close to 400rwhp in the long run.
There are so many other things you could throw your money at to go faster before you touch the rear, especially a 10 bolt. A nice stall and some nittos, would almost cut a whole second off your ET. I've had 3.23's, 3.42's, and now 3.91's. I've cut a 1.6 60' foot with my 3.23 10 bolt and I guarantee the big half will suffer with the stock cam and 4.10's.
The gears will make it feel faster, but the gains are minimal and you will not have the same top end. Just slapping some 4.10's in a bolt on car isn't ideal. If you already got em' then feel free to do it up, remember though that the 10 bolt is a hair better than a toothpick. Adding those gears will not only add more punishment and rotation to it, but any lower gear like that is also effectively weaker than the equivalent higher.
It's not the end of the world, you might as well go ahead and try em'. Can always change it up later.

The OP said it wasnt to him:
-----------------------------
Yeah and a lighter load, which equates into less wear.
-----------------------------
He didnt mention it bc its not important to him.
-----------------------------
So you missed this post:
------------------------------
Thats rediculous. The scoreboard might give you a tiny indicator but this is just a young guy who likes to go fast. Not a bracket racer. I know this bc I read this post:
--------------------------------
Although, you did give him the answer he was looking for right here:
---------------------------------
He didnt ask what was ideal.
----------------------------------
No, it isn't.

I have considered going with a 3.73, at this time I have a 3.23. Stock stall, stock tranny, bolt ons...is a tune necessary when making this change? Sorry for the hijack OP! LOL!

i have a ta and its a m6 but yeah mine is stock 10 bolt with 4.10's i think 4.10's in an a4 is a lil much but i wouldnt worry about it, like i said at least try them out and if you like them keep them if not go 3.73's instead. 3.73s in an a4 is almost the same as 4.10s in a m6

my 3.73's are awesome for me. I picked up almost .6 going from 2.73, and my mph was higher. As far as the street, 4.10's will be fine. They will give you what you are looking for. They will suck from a high roll, but roll racing is for pussies anyway.

Well they are already ordered so they might as well go in, we do drive an ls1 so do we really give a **** about gas? That seems to be the deal with most, maybe I should go buy a hybrid, I only drive about 40 miles a week unless I go for a drive on the weekend. I don't wanna know about gas, I wanna know about perormance with them. Any opinions about that?

I'm the man you need to talk to. I've got 4.10's in a 10 bolt.
I don't see why gas mileage is that important being that we have performance cars.
It pulls like a ************. That is all. Any questions?

I used to run 3.73s in my 01 before i totaled it. Very good performance/dd gear. Run 4.10s in my 96 now and I ******* hate them for daily driving. Honostly i cant feel much if any difference between the two performance wise, but i cant be certain since i have not had it to track yet with my new setup. My gas mileage stays around 20 almost 21 driving on interstate.
3.42s and a nice stall are coming soon.
Just because you have already ordered them doesnt mean you have to install them. Take them back or sell them. Easier to do now then wait till they are installed. Cant get **** for used gears out of a 10 bolt.

Cruising at 70 I'm at 3000-3100 RPM.
From the bottom of second gear it really pulls hard and since I recently got a tune it doesn't shift until 6500 so when it does shift it pins you back.
It pulls harder than it did before in any gear.

My other vehicle gets 8 MPG so it's my DD with the good mileage heh. I haven't had the chance to measure the MPG with 4.10's yet.

I've got 4.10's in my auto. If it was a DD I would have NEVER put the 4.10's in there. My gas mileage is crap over 60 mph. I'm reving at 2600 at 70 and almost 3k at 80. With the 3.73's I was getting over 25 mpg but the 4.10's killed that. Now it's like 16-18 mpg. It's great for the strip since N/A I'm doing 6500 at the traps, but it's a drag car and that's what I wanted. Stick with the 3.73's and you'll be much happier.
