Default HELP! Bad 4L60E problem

Over the last few weeks I would occasionally hear some whining coming from under the car. The whining was heard loudly in gear (drive or reverse) while sitting still or moving slowly. I could also hear the whining while moving faster but it was not as loud or was being drowned out by other sounds. I am fairly sure the whining would go away after the converter locked. The whining was not there in neutral or park.

Today I took the car out for more testing. When I pulled back into the driveway everything was “normal” with the car with the exception of the whining. I put the car in neutral and sat for a few minutes. I put the gear selector in reverse and the engine loaded down and cutoff. I restarted it and put in the drive and it did the same thing. Again I restarted car and let it idle put it back in drive and reverse and all seemed OK.

I took the car for a short test drive and the trans fluid temp was rising quickly. It also took a lot more gas to get the car to move than usual and it took the TC a while to lockup once all the conditions were met

When I put the car in drive there is positive gear engagement but it takes about 1600rpm to get the car to move.
Reverse also has positive gear engagement and the car moves with just the idle rpm.

I am thinking the torque converter has gone bad and maybe more problems.

What do you all think?

Any trouble shooting tips?

Thanks

John

Sounds like a converter problem.

I had that problem before and it ended up finding that the hub on the converter had cracked.Pull it out and check to make sure it's not cracked. If you can catch it now it will save alot of damage. Eventually it will tear the pump up and you will have even more problems.

I am going to put a Vig 3200 in it today and see if that fixes the problem.

Well putting the vig 3200 in was a no go due to aluminum shavings in the pan.
