Default Tranny Cooler

What size tranny cooler should I be running on the street with a 3200 stall??
I was looking at 3/4" thick x 7.5" x 12". Is that enough??

I like the 1 1/2 thick plate coolers. I ran a B+M 70264 for about 1 1/2 years and it performed great.

Is there any advantage of the 1 1/2" over the 3/4" or is it more of a "fit" requirement??

Well its twice as thick so that tells me it can cool better. No reason to go with the slimmer version.

Is there any sort of formula or "rule of thumb" to get the right size cooler without going overkill??

First off, there is no overkill when it comes to keeping transmissions cool IMO. General rule of thumb is "put the biggest damn tranny cooler that you can fit in there." The B+M 70264 is the most popular cooler on this site that I know of. It does work well. I recently switched to B+M 1.5x10.5x11. Its about 1/3 bigger. I like it so far, temps have been completely in check.

You want to make sure the trans fluid gets up to and stays around operating temperature... I think that's a minimum of around 180 degrees.

^^^ my tranny never gets past 150* when it gets cold here the temp never gets off from 100* on the gauge and i have the B&M 1.5x11x11(70274 part number)

I've been running Derale part number 13104. Runs nice and cold. During the cooler months here in OK while at 30 mph and up, the temp gauge won't go over 120. Will bump against 150 at idle if I've been driving a lot or romping on it.
