Has anyone just rebuilt the 3/4 clutch pack only --or do you have to rebiuld the entire trans ?

By all means. You can just toss in a set of 3/4's without a problem. You'll need a few gaskets but that's about it.

my buddy has replaced the 3/4 clutches on an otherwise perfectly functioning tranny about 5 times now.....

I guess you need to soak the clutches for a 1/2 hour or so before you install them
otherwise they burn up real fast
Now the 3/4 is the clutches at the back end of the drum with the input shaft --?????
god dont tell me its the front ones

Yep, thems the ones! Right in the back of the input housing. They're a pretty simple repair as far as internal work goes. Make sure before you soak the plates in ATF you check your clearances. Once you soak them you'll never be able to accurately determine freeplay.

The question posted by Grape Ape was can you just replace the 3/4 clutch pack.

Do to a software glitch, the post may have been messed up in doing maintenance.
