HELP!!! 3rd and 4th not catching
I'm in need of some help guys.I have a A4 and my 1st and 2nd work just fine but once it hits 3rd it just stays put and acts like it in nutral. I checked my fluids and it was just touching the dipstick so I added some fluids in but nothing got better, though it did smelled burnt. any help in what it could be? do I need a rebuild or do I need to swap trannys? thanks for any help

does it eventually go into 3rd?? if its just a delayed shift then it sounds like your in need of atleast a shift kit to cure the problem for now... but your probly going to need a freshing up soon!

yep mine did the same thing... turns out my 3-4 clutches & steels were roasted, check ball was stuck, and the pump bushing was a little worn... the master rebuild kit is only $150 including the clutches, steels, bushings, gaskets, and seals...
it was a very easy rebuild, just got it put back in tonight and it works like a champ!
try replacing the fluid and filter befor you get to excited.... also while the pan is off check your solenoids with an ohm meter.

Don't waste money on a fluid swap, don't ohm the solenoids. A shift kit is the absolute best way to waste your time and money right now.
Unplug the electrical connector and try to drive it.
Unplugging the electrical puts it in 3rd (no voltage to either solenoid) and puts it at max line pressure.
It's still going to slip most likely. Every transmission I ever took apart that had a neutral 2-3 ended up having worn 3-4 clutches.

If you dont know what or where a solenoid is DO NOT ATEMPT a rebuild on your own , either have someone do it or gte a trans allready done from a vendor here or if the buget is really low go for used. Not the best choice IMO never had much luck with used trans but better than attempting to build a trans wwhen you know absolutly nothing about them.
Good luck with whatever you do.

There are a few sponsors on here that have an excellent reputation... give them a call and see what they can do! buy a built one so you only have to buy it once!!!

Judging by your last few posts i think you might just be best off to buy a trans form one of the sponsors.... not trying to be an ***...

So what are they going to do?
If you could replace the transmission yourself, and get a new converter and cooler. You'd be better off with one of these.
