I called a local speed shop and the guy there said not to put in a shift kit butto put in 2 extra quarts of fluid. He also said something about a crappy design in the trans pan. Anyone tried this?

Holy crap, you'd better get a different speed shop if he simply told you to put in two extra quarts of fluid!
The 4L60E does not like too little fluid, or too much fluid.

Hold on before you do that, ..., you'll find better info here as soon as more peopel reply. (Or better, just keep readin' as it's all been mentioned before, ...)

Trans Pan has nothing to do with it.
What the hell, I can't believe this guy told you this crap.

There are options to change the pan to for instance, the truck application pan which will add capacity. Or an aftermarket pan such as a B&M, or TCI pan. Some of them allow for extra capacity.

Search Ebay or Google for "TransGo 4L60E-HD2". That's all you need to know.
About $85-120 shipped, depending on where you buy it.
It's not for the faint of heart. Yes, it's pretty self-explanatory & a very good kit. But it alone may not be your best answer.

Keep searchin', ..., read all ya can. You'll get a better idea of what ya want to do.
