Default Opinions for a stall

I have a 99 z28 with Hooker Long Tubes and an SLP lid. sitting in my bedroom right now is an ASA cam (226-236, 110 lsa), Fast 90mm intake manifold (that I'm going to bore out to 95mm), a janzer 95mm throttle body, and 3.73 gears. With this setup, I'm wondering what the best stall would be. She is my daily driver, but I would like to put up some nice numbers on the dyno...
I was looking at a Yank 2800 from their stealth series, but I'd really like another opinion. I also looked at vigilantes, but I really can't afford to spend a grand on a stall... Your thoughts???

yeah...after i posted i realized that a 4K stall might actually be a bit much for DD duty....although i've heard lots of guys on here say they DD a 4K stall....i guess that kind of depends on your opinion on what's "streetable". while i can't speak from experience as i have yet to put a stall in my car from most of the research i've done on here i'd have to agree that a 3-3.5K stall would be the way to go for good performance yet streetable. I, myself am planning on a 3.6K stall.

id recommend a Yank SS3600 it is very DD friendly and to be honest i wouldn't wast my money on any stall speed lower than that. Vigs are also very good but from my experience i like my yank better. just don't cheap out on a stall its very important to get something good

they are very streetable. you probably wont even notice a difference driving wise between a 3500 - 4000.

My car DD's fine with a 4K stall and it has factory 2.73's. Your car will drive better with a 3.73, the converter will feel tighter, so go with a big converter. The converter is the best upgrade for an A4 car. It will have low dyno #'s but will outrun most all 450hp M6 cars. It all depends on how fast you want to go, my car ran 11.50 full weight with less than 400 rwhp on the dyno.

I put in an FTI 3600 a short while ago and I'm REALLY happy with it but I really don't see myself going any bigger for a DD

got 3.42s with a yank3600, I drive it every day to work.( have only had it for 2 weeks )I can keep rpms under 2500 the whole time and easily keep up with traffic. Once it locks up its doing 40ish at 1300 rpm. If that's streetable enough then I say go for that.

I was under the impression that 4k would be WAY too big. I don't know much about auto trannies, but the reasearch that I have done tells me that unless I'm doing an LS7 stroker swap with a 12 bolt rear end and a bomb proof 4L60E that I would actually be losing performance. And from what I understand, a cam/bolt on LS1 doesn't really need anything over 3600. And that's for drag. If I'm wrong, please let me know. Like I said, I don't know **** about auto trannies...

If you are wanting maximum acceleration you want a stall that is an actual stall of 500 rpm below peak torque. That is right from Precision Industries web site. We can't say a 3000, 3500 or 4000 will give best performance without knowing peak torque of the engine.

For street depends on choice. What rpm is acceptable under normal acceleration? Do you want rpm to rise to 2000, 2500, 3000 or what? Some may consider 3000 acceptable. I personally like my 1500 rpm during normal acceleration (stock converter) but more would certainly be acceptable for the gains a converter produces. My 06 Malibu rises to almost 2500 rpm under normal acceleration with the stock converter. I consider it pretty streetable but like my Corvettes 1500 better.

I daily drive a 230 duration cam and all bolt ons along with a vig 3200 stall and 3.73 gears. it is a perfect setup for a daily driver. it is amazing how drivable my car is. the best way to describe my setup is that it does drive like stock with rumble at ide, and it shifts like stock just a bit harder with a shift kit, and then when i punch it, it comes alive..LOL.

but i plan on seriously adding a bigger stall. i am honestly looking at a 4k stall.

I was worried like you but finally got sick of being slow as **** with a cam and got a Yank ss3600 and wish I had done that a long time ago. Drives almost like stock until you nail it and locks on the highway...unless you are climbing very steep hills at low speeds (40mph or lower) you will barely notice its stalled.

Somebody lied to you And from what I understand, a cam/bolt on LS1 doesn't really need anything over 3600. You're right, it doesn't "need" a 4k converter. But your motor doesn't "need" a cam either. Compare apples to apples here And that's for drag. If I'm wrong, please let me know. Like I said, I don't know **** about auto trannies...
My thoughts in bold. Bottom line is simply this, I ran a 3200 with a stock cam, stock powerband, and stock gears... and it was great, way better then stock. However it didnt eliminate all the dead spots in the powerband. I really feel like a stock car should run a 3600 converter. I then added a TR224 which moved the powerband up higher, and still it was a great combo, however now i needed just a little more stall again, it was a little weak in the midrange (take weak with a grain of salt here) Basically the midrange didn't pull as good as the top end. So I stepped up to a 4K stall and eliminated the weaker area in the midrange. Now the car ***** and gets any time, anywhere, any gear. I think you could easily get by with a 3200, no problem. Run that if thats what you want. However, to maximize your combo, I would look to a 3600, maybe 4k depending on where the powerband is for that cam.
