Default using washers for tc install

when i removed my stall, the previous owner used washers for the correct tolerances. now when i re-install the stall, what do you guys do as far as holding the washers on the converter pads before mounting it to the flexplate. is there a specific type of grease to use? does it even matter? i've heard guys using masking tape and cutting the bolt holes but just wanted to get some advice before the install. thanks.
