Default No second gear in my 4l60e

I have a 2000 WS6 TA. My second gear started slipping one day then was gone the next. Checked my tranny fluid and i was a quart low. Question is do i have to rebuild the whole tranny or is it a valve body issue? The fluid is still red and i have put prob 5k miles on the tranny since i have lost 2nd gear. Thanks

It could be the 2nd accumulator piston, worn or broken. It can be accessed and checked by taking the pan off, and the three bolts that hold it's housing in place.

And you can also check the 2nd servo on the side of the trans.
The 2nd servo can be taken out but it can be hard to get to. It's easier to put a jack under the trans, remove the 4 cross member bolts, and lower it a little.
Last time I did this I still had to take it out in pieces, removing the E-clip and apply pin seperate.

It's not very common that the 2nd servo just fails.
It could also be a check ball blown through the seperator plate.
Did second ever shift real hard for a period of time before this problem?
Is the trans 100% stock?

The trans am is a bolt on car and was tuned. So yes the trans is stock but shifts harder with the tune. ya the first to 2nd was really hard. So this is a easy fix?

Well it depends on the problem.
If it was my car I'd take the pan off, break open the filter, look for garbage in the pan and filter.

Then I'd take the accumulator housing off and inpect the piston, bore, and wear around the pin.

Then I'd take the servo out and inspect it, take the seals off, put it back in and check the servo travel. It's rare but the servo pin can punch a hole in the band enough to lose second, but still have 4th.

If nothing found at after all that, take the valve body off, inspect it and clean it.

As the band wears, you will lose 2nd and 4th gear. Usually, 2nd is lost first. Sometimes by increasing the length of the servo pin you can get a bit more life out of the trans, but it will soon need a rebuild.
See my post #2 in this recent thread where the OP got his trans working again by lengthening the servo pin and a few other things I suggested. (The trans was NOT removed.)

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic...t-trouble.html (Start at post #2 - the OP is reporting no 2nd gear.)
