Default L92 460RWHP / 6L80 / 285-305 18 tire / = what converter for the street?

I am building a 1970 Lemans with a Cadillac L92 built up to 450 to 460 Hp, 6L80 transmission and a 285 to a 305 Nitto tire. I am trying to decide on a converter that will not result in too much tire spin for the street.

Any suggestions?

Can I get away with the stock converter of 1800 or will this cause the car to be flat off the start?

We have a 258mm option that would be perfect for your setup. It would be about a 2800 stall and will hit the tires fairly soft. It is a great converter for a 6L80 and DD. You will love it.

Saw your question posted over on Pro-Touring Forum.

My question to you, is your car being built to compete in Pro-Touring style events, are just straight line WOT acceleration events. That is TQ converter stall requirement game changer to me.

It's my belief right are wrong that a Torque Converter for a car built to be a P-T contender where you have to down shift as well as up shift to keep engine in it's power band requires lower stall than car built for straight line performance on street are strip.

Rear end ratio to match weight of car is going to be important too. While a 6L80E is a 6 speed to me it has only 3 usable gears when it comes to most Pro Touring completions, due to having 4.03 1st gear, and 2 OD gears, leaving 2nd, 3rd & 4th as main competition gears. About the same ratios as A4 transmissions.

That 4.03 1st gear will get the weight moving.

Both of my Automatic builds meet Pro Touring requirements for upgrades to brakes and suspension to go along with engine mods. One with 6L80E is stalled for straight line by one of the above two Vendors, while the other one with 4L80 based transmission is stalled for Pro Touring type completions by the other one.

One has 3200-3400 rpm stall, while the other one is 2400-2500 rpm., just slightly above stock. 6L 3.07 rear gear, 4L 3.54 ratio.

Both cars are the same model and body style, just one is coupe and other is a convertible. The one with 6L & 3.07 has the same final non overdrive gear ratio as the A4 with 3.54 due to 6L80's 4th gear 1.15 ratio.
