Default 4L60e not engaging consistently

It started last night. I start the car, put it in drive (or even 1,2,3) and it won't engage the gear, it'll just act like it's in neutral....HOWEVER If I repeat this process, 1 out of every 6 tries, it'll engage gear and move but then it'll die out very quickly and go back to free revving.

Any ideas? There is plenty of fluid.
This is a built A4 that is vacuum modulated.

any ideas on what it might be? don't really want to ship it in for a full rebuild if it's just one or two things I can do myself

You could have a plugged filter, converter problem,or pump problem either way it needs to get pulled and gone through.
