Default What caused all this?

My car isn't really that fast. Minor bolt ons..

Runs 13.1 @ 107..

My brother just took my transmission apart and the shop said they'd never seen anything like it.

The sprag was busted.. sprag housing.. clutch drum

He named off all KINDS of ****.



What the hell caused this? I have stock converter... no slicks..

Anybody had the same amount of damage?

Once one thing breaks... it all gets mixed up inside.

The drum is a surprise though..

If they've never seen a busted sprag in a 700R4/4L60-E, they aren't much of a transmission shop! They break all the time in these cars. Usually straight HP won't do it though. Wheelhop/dry burnouts can do it. So can hard hooks, especially if there was a little spin then dead hook. Borg Warner makes a 29 element sprag that's supposed to be stronger and they're pretty cheap. And yeah, when they go they usually take a bunch of crap with them. I'm guessing your forward sprag went since it broke the drum on the input shaft. The sprag goes around the aluminum center "core" I guess you could say and when they blow up they will usually cause a diagonal crack down the length of it.

Edit: in the future, use "D" when racing not OD. That will engage the overrun clutches and lock up the sprag, taking most of the force off of it.

i broke the drum before and i fixed the tranny ,after 7 races with et street and 100 shot nitrous i broke the drum and sprag and the clutches looked brand new

3=D, 4=OD. pete2k Z28 is 100% correct in his 'edit' about using 3 or D vs using 4 or OD for those exact reasons.

I'm pretty sure all the damage was caused by a broken tranny mount. DAMNIT!

oh well.. shes as good as new now.
