Default 4L65 w/trany cooler only

I am doing a LSx swap into a old car. I have a 4L64e trans and I was wondering if I had a manual radiator, can I just run one (or two if need be) external trans cooler. Plate style. If so, what sizes should I get? Where can I plumb trans temp sender? What temp range should I be seeing on a stock trans?

thanks,
Jim

street or strip? both maybe, it seems like it but two is overkill a nice B&M 70274 would fit the bill.

Just one without a radiator cooler? Car is mainly street, but I will probably try the strip once I get a aftermarket VVT cam in it.

thanks,
Jim

Yes, just the plate style cooler and no in-radiator cooler, you will be fine it will run cool.

As a backup to what has been said, a guy from Gearstar stated the same thing in the October 2010 Chevy High Performance magazine, and even recommended not using the in-radiator cooler. I've heard it both ways for years, but I think an ample single cooler will do in most instances.

With a reasonable cooler placed in airflow, the fluid temp will be well below engine coolant temp, but it will be sufficiently warm to allow TCC lockup.

im my 67 camaro (4l60) i run a plate style and no rad cooler. Infact my plate cooler is a stock police package caprice unit (that car got a t56) I ran a temp switch on the feed line and have it control a fan on it (on at 180*F, off at 170*F) car survived powertour and lots of woodward cruising last summer, only time the fan ever kicked on was when sitting in heavy traffic.
