so stock shifter doesn't let you downshift without pressing button?
And to pull out of Park, you have to BOTH press brake AND push the button?

yeah its a saftey thing. You have to press the brake and button to get the trans out of park, because kids like buttons

Then to down shift you have to also press the button so you just dont bump it into a lower gear.

OK, things start to get clear now And what about reverse from N, I assume you have to also press smth.?
If I understand correctly, there is only 1 solenoid on the shifter, and it is operated by brake pedal? SO when swapping A4 I can bin it?

yes to go to reverse from netrual you have to use the button. as for the brake release i think you can just bypass it if you cant or dont have that cable.
