Default trans temp?

So i installed my rebuilt performabuilt level 2 trans back in march. I also swapped out my old trans cooler for the hayden one that the supply with there trans. Driving around the trans would get up to 190-200 plus range i never saw temps like this before unless i was really getting on it or at the track. I went ahead and ordered the b&m trans cooler figuring the hayden unit was not as effiecent. so i installed it today and then went on a 20min drive and when i return home the trans was at 200. i really want to figure out what is going on before cruisin weekend in a few weeks. any help would be awesome

Did you have the Vig converter before you installed the new trans, or did you install it for the first time with the trans?

200 degrees isn't dangerously hot. I think a lot of guys here like ice-cold trans fluid though.

Where are you getting your trans temp reading from? Where did you install the sending unit?

Well, part of the change in temperature might have something to do with the Circle D converter.

How close are the Interceptor gauge and the one reading from the pan? I think the sending unit that the interceptor reads off of is usually a little higher than what you see in the pan because of its location.

I have that guage and I "have heard" that it will read a little higher than a aftermarket trans temp sender because the stock sensor is in a different place than the aftermarket would be. I cant comfirm if thats the case but I wish it was because my temps seem alot higher than alot of guys report on here. I have 3600 stall and so far this spring at 70f I have been 180f with trans temp. Im not very worried about it because the sponsor says this...read #4...https://ls1tech.com/forums/7412061-post4.html

Are you sure its that much of a difference?
When you got home from 20 min drive was the aftermarket sensor reading 200 or the interceptor? If it was the interceptor reading 200 then isnt that your answer to why its so high?

Yes the one that measures using the trans internal sensor will measure higher because in reality its measuring the valvebody and case temp more than the fluid temp. Also if your running through the raditor to the temp will always closley follow engine temp too.
However the temps you are getting are well within normal range,

How much higher does the stock trans temp sensor really read than an aftermarket gauge? Is it really 20-30f higher?

So it probably should be noted in a sticky somewhere that trans temps will read 20-30f higher for the guys who are reading temps from stock sensor. I was starting to think that I might have issues in hot summer seeing how its only early spring and im seeing 180f trans temps already. But now I know my interceptor is reading 20-30 higher than an aftermarket sensor. Great info thanks.

Which gauge is giving you the 200* reading - the Interceptor or the pan gauge?

If your temps are that high, you might benefit from running the trans fluid through the stock cooler on the radiator tank. That will bring the fluid temp down closer to the coolant temp in the side of the tank (which is cooler than what's in the engine) before it goes into the separate trans cooler.

If your Interceptor is reading 200* while your pan gauge is around 170*-180*, you're right where you want to be.
