Default What trans should I go with??? Help me choose.

I have a 00 Z28 w/ a 4l60e. Im currently building a LS2 433 and it will be sprayed w/ a 250-300 shot of laughing gas. I figured Id rather replace the trans now than wait for it to blow up. I want to swap in either a TH350, TH400, 700R4 or a powerglide. Im basically looking to swap in a trans thats cheap to build up and if I break it, cheap to replace. A overdrive is a plus but not required. I rather save the weight anyway.

The car will not be a daily driver, however I would like to be able to take it to work on Fridays and cruise around with it on the wknds. The car will also be seeing a lot of track daysabout twice a month or more.

I need help deciding on what trans to go with. Also, does anyone have weight differences between these 4 transmissions?

Thanks guys

from the stickies

Weight-
4l80e- wet 255
4l60e- wet 175
TH400- wet 140
TH350- wet 130
Powerglide- wet 110

I would do a TH350 or 400.
350 will be a bit faster but the 400 will be stronger.

Ya those are the two that I was leaning more towards. The 10lbs between the 350 & 400 will not make any noticable difference. I just want to see what results other have had from these trans.

A 4L80E isn't 255 lbs...

If you're going with a TH400 check out this section for one I posted a couple of weeks ago on sale, we still have it.

I saw that one. A little more than I wanted to spend right now. I need to get rid of my 4L60E first.

Im pretty sure the first gear in the 350 is better and if its 10lbs rotating weight its worth more than 10lbs dead weight. Also Im not sure on how accurate those weights are since I stole that from the stickies but just lifting a 400 and 350 side by side the 400 def feels heavier.

And don't skimp out....a trans to hold that power is going to cost you no matter what. You also need to look into safety features that are options

Really? Would you really want a glide on the street? Also doesnt the first gear suck unless your sprayin out of the hole or making a ton of power?

A 550+Hp engine alone would keep a glide happy, along with the juice on top of that. street driving will all depend on what he wants. Had a few friends with 4xxcube engines run their glides on the street just fine. Now the overall set up, rear gear/tire will factor in too. Hell good buddy of mine went faster with a glide over a th400 in a 3500lb car with a 438 in it.

I guess its all in what you consider streetable. Im running a RMVB Th350 but wouldnt consider a glide unless it was a track only car

I've got a rmvb 400 in mine. The converter can really help Alot too. I prolly could just leave the car in 3rd and drive around(would t obviously) but just the fact that I don't even stay in 2nd long enough to even worry about it when I'm on the street. Now something interesting, last track outing my car was runnin 7.3s on a 1.58 60ft time. 2nd pass I accidentally took off in 2nd and went 1.71. I lifted half track and got on the brakes to slow the car to 71mph from 93 and STILL went 7.8 LOL! Depends on what the OP wants but I don't think he should count a glide out. At least call up some shops and get their opinion. I put my 2 cents in with the assumption it will be a drag car driven on the street...too lazy to scroll back up lol

LOL!!!

I see what you guys are saying. The car is basically going to be a serious sleeper. It's going to look as stock as possible but underneath is where the magic will be. My goal is going to be to reduce the weight down from 3550lbs to 3200lbs at least but will still have interior. The car is not going to be the most comfortable car on the streets (no A/C, no P/S, very little sound absorbing material, 1pc racing seats, etc).

So to sum it all up, its going to be a drag car that can be driven on the streets. Ive never driven a car with a PowerGlide so I dont know what it would be like. I would prefer the addition of a 3rd gear for the street.

The thing I like about the Glide is the weight. To me, a light trans is a big plus.

I like the 350 & 400 because theyre very strong transmissions. Preferably the 350.

remember seeing this in the fs section when reading the OP's thread. Don't really know the going rate for any of the autos, just thought I'd post it up. Good luck w/ the build OP

Get with a few vendors and see what they recommend.

if you wanna drive it any real distance id go with a 4l80e stage 3 from jakes performance, you get the strength of the 400 but have od and a trans brake....see how long that th350 holds up with a trans brake for the same kind of money as a 4l80e and im loving mine.

Drive a th400 or th350 for about 50 miles and you will want overdrive, I did, lol. Mine was screaming around 3200rpms at 60mph. It sucks some serious gas and puts a lot of wear on a motor.
