If you buy a "complete" kit, it's pretty simple. I installed one on my old '94 Formula(R.I.P.) in about 35 minutes, and on my '87 GN in about 45. Beware, though. My buddy and I took about 3 hours on his cheap E-Bay gauge on a '97 TA. Most of that was trips to the parts store to get missing fittings. When buying one of these, "Choose, but choose wisely".!

I guess I should elaborate. Sorry. With a "complete" kit or without, the idea is the same. You will splice into the return side of your trans-cooler. That remains the same even if you use an aftermarket one. You splice in a sending-unit that sends a signal to your gauge. The gauge itself will need a 12v switched source for its backlighting at night. Depending on the manufacturer, you will either ground at chassis from the gauge, or the ground will be taken care of on the sending unit. Some kits require hard-line cutting, most "good" kits splice right into the threaded fitting on the trans.
All-in-all, a pretty straight-forward install. And, I might add, a really smart one.

I would install the sending unit into the pressure port of the transmission, it IS half way up on the drivers side of the A4, it is 1/8 NPT. That is where I had mine installed.
The temperature coming out of your cooler is not a true reading of the temperature in the transmission.
