Default Advice on Transmission

Army soldier living in Germany, I have lost 3rd and 4th gear on my Automatic trans...I have a 98 TA. I have 1st, and second and reverse. I believe i need a new one .....any ideas on where i can get one at a reasonable price. The trans has over 120,000 miles on it.

I'm sure one of our sponsors could help you. The part that is going to be ruff is the shipping/customs and price of the core depending on who you decide to get a trans from. Not sure if you have anyone on base that can help you with this but it might not be a bad idea to get a basic overhaul kit and fix what you have. I'm pretty confident that you have an issue with the 3-4 clutch in your unit for what its worth. If you have someone to help you with this, get the trans apart to see if you will be in need of any hard parts and then order them accordingly with the basic parts needed to freshen up your unit.

A common problem with 4L60E transmissions is loosing 3rd and 4th gears because the "3-4 clutch" wears out. Most likely there is nothing broken in the trans and a rebuild will bring it back to life. Since this is such a common transmission, it should not be that hard to find a rebuilder even in Germany. Or look for a rebuilt one locally; basically any year 4L60E between '98 and '06 will work in your car.

Also, check if the military will pay for shipping from the US to Germany; that way you might consider buying a rebuilt transmission and having it shipped to Germany for no more than the shipping cost in the US.

There are about 10 detailed rebuild videos on youtube. That should be more than enough info with an ATGS manual for the average do it yourselfer to acomplish a nice 1st time rebuild and be sucessful. Do the beast sunshell and a nice red alto or borg warner clutch/steel rebuild kit with boost valve and upgraded parts. Decide on the converter and there you have it. Go to it...

As long as you don't overrev the engine, it shouldn't be a problem. Also keep the gear selector in "2" so that the transmission doesn't attempt to go into 3 as that could cause an overrev or maybe a bit more damage to the trans.
Good luck and keep us posted.

If you have not found a solution yet I would not mind helping you out. Like Vince said, shipping can be an issue... but I have resources for International Shipping and have shipped to Europe, New Zealand and Australia over the years.

Hit me with a pm if you like and we'll figure out a plan to get you back up and running.

There you go,
Let Gilbert hook you up on a build and if need be we do quite a bit of international shipping ourselves, I would be more than happy to check with our freight company what our rate is to Germany and at least compare to what Gilbert can get. If we can save you some money on shipping with our volume discount, you can use our account to ship at cost.

We try to look out for the military guys Gilbert. I've spent quite a bit of time in the military or otherwise working with the military.

Yep we do too Jake! Thanks for your service friend!

I let all the Military guys I work with know that if it were not for them I would not be able to wake up and do what I absolutely love to do every day I step foot into my shop. I have a soft place in my heart for the guys who put it all on the line every day for the rest of us... always will.

Gilbert,
Thannks for the reply and offer for assistance. The engine in my TA is stock....so not looking for anything super just a solid replacement, Possible future mods ahead but nothing extreme. But driving on the Autobahn is what probably killed my last one...
