Default Which 4l60???

I'm wanting to send my tranny off the be built but want another one in it for the time being. I noticed a lot of them on CL and for sale locally but I'm not sure which ones are interchangeable. All of them seem to have removeable bellhousings as well as long talihousings which I of course would have to use mine unless I did a tunnel mount torque arm. I'm wondering if old school 350 vortech trannies will work and if the v6 version is still built a little weaker than the v8 versions. Actual F body trannies seem to be unavailable for a reasonable price around central Ok so any help here would be appreciated

Feel free to give me a call in the morning. I'm sure I can help you out. Oklahoma City isn't far at all from Dallas!

I'm rebuilding it myself with parts I already bought when I get a few projects out of my way not spending any more money except on a spare/backup tranny so probably not gonna do a sponsor a lot of good. I just need info not a sales pitch

First it would help to tell us exactly what year car and tranny you currently have.
I don't know anything about types of tail housings, but thought there were only 4WD and 2WD output shafts. It takes a fail amount of disassembly to change the output shaft.

I suspect that any '96 to '06 should work just fine assuming it has the correct bell housing or a removable bell housing. Or get the ATSG "update" manual which covers the differences in detail. IIRC pre-96 have a different input shaft and therefor might need a different torque converter, which in turn might not match an LS1 engine. I'm pretty sure you want a 300mm input shaft; retrofitting it is expensive.

I can easily find recent model "broken" 4L60E on CL for under $200. Often reverse is shot. (Broken teflon rings.)

You should consider giving Gilbert a call anyway; I have heard that he is very generous with his knowledge even when he knows there is little chance of a sale. He will know all this much better than anyone else.

No offense buddy, but I didn't say call me I will sell you a transmission.

I said call me, I'm sure I can help you out. I provide free information to people I do not know and do not make a dime off of every day. But, you didn't know that, so no big deal.

Hey man I was actually going to say that Gilbert was likely either going to offer to sell you a core at a pretty good price, since he's a pretty known 4L60E builder and his core supplier is sure to give him a very nice discount with his amount of cores he consistently has to purchase.

That or he would direct you to someone he knows that could probably snag you a good deal on a core.

OR he might just tell you all you need to know, make a few suggestions, give some advice and answer any questions.

But it seems people already beat me to it
