Which 4l60???
I don't know anything about types of tail housings, but thought there were only 4WD and 2WD output shafts. It takes a fail amount of disassembly to change the output shaft.
I suspect that any '96 to '06 should work just fine assuming it has the correct bell housing or a removable bell housing. Or get the ATSG "update" manual which covers the differences in detail. IIRC pre-96 have a different input shaft and therefor might need a different torque converter, which in turn might not match an LS1 engine. I'm pretty sure you want a 300mm input shaft; retrofitting it is expensive.
I can easily find recent model "broken" 4L60E on CL for under $200. Often reverse is shot. (Broken teflon rings.)
You should consider giving Gilbert a call anyway; I have heard that he is very generous with his knowledge even when he knows there is little chance of a sale. He will know all this much better than anyone else.
I said call me, I'm sure I can help you out. I provide free information to people I do not know and do not make a dime off of every day. But, you didn't know that, so no big deal.
