Default optimal trans temp w/ stall

I was driving around town for about 30 min today in traffic and noticed my trans temp got up to 194 on my aeroforce interceptor gauge. I was just curious if that is too high for a stalled auto to run. Also, what would be the best range for my transmission temp. to be around?

180-200 is common with lots of stop and go traffic. Mine has never gotten above this even after hard trips down the track in 90 degree heat. Mine likes to run around 140-160 during the summer.

What cooler and stall are you guys running?

I was planning on a 3400-3600 stall with a B&M 70264. I would also like to know about temps because I won't have money for a trans for a while! Guess I'd better find a decent gauge too

The 264 is fine for most climates. I switched to the 274 (about 1/3 bigger) because its gets HOT here in the south, I plan on racing a lot, and I liked the fact that it has the 1/2" inlets/outlets. I eventually ran AN lines to it as well.

I live MD but for the last few years the weather has been crazy. Winters as low as 15 degrees usually (but I don't drive the car that much in the winter) and Summer's range from 80-105 degrees lately. I don't plan to take it to the track that much, hopefully a 264 would be fine for that.

01ss since you are in the south do you have your cooler bypassing the radiator because your temps are low considering your location.

Mine nevers sees over 175 even running it hard.I have a 3600 Fti with a 1.78 str.Which is very effeicent.I would guess the higher the str the hotter the trans would be.

The cooler the better is always how I like them, but 160-180 is acceptable as average for most areas of the country. When you start approaching 200, that's when you should start keeping a close eye on it. Remember the number one cause of trans failure is heat. It might be a smart idea to look into a good aftermarket cooler if that temperature remains consistent.

I have a good cooler that's why I was asking about what the best temp range would be

I ran my 264 after my radiator, and noticed 185 degree temps no matter what the weather was after you drove it long enough. I bypassed the radiator after a while and saw overall average temps went down, especially during the cooler months where the fluid wasn't being warmed by the radiator. I've never looked back.

I might have to give that a try. I normally see upper 170s-low 180s when cruising.

the more stall the more heat-slight hills, etc will create heat-i run in the 160-180, sometimes a lower gear is better to help conv. lockup
i notice when the converter locks up, temps will fall pretty good

Normally around 160-170*

We use this unit exclusively in the shop and eliminate the radiator cooler. This is thermal controlled and if the cooler in the radiator lets go you wont FRY a TRANNY. I have seen many a radiator cooler fail and introduce coolant in to the TRANNY.

So after a nice drive around today and some spirited driving the temp once again got up to 194. I think I'm going to be moving my cooler to see if I can get it in a better location and bypassing the stock one. Maybe I shouldn't be too paranoid about it but I have like 200 miles on a brand new tranny and converter and want them to last.

Mark mine was 170s-190s yesterday racing around a few hours. Dont forget your reading yours same place as mine and its probably reading higher than it does vs an aftermarket sensor. Normal operating temp IIRC is 190-200 according to the book. I wouldnt worry to much.
Now, I may be switching to a b and m pretty soon and see if mine goes lower but till then im not worried. Its always under 195 even racing around.
