Default FTI, Yank, Circle-D, please guys help me pick a converter...

So I have a 1968 Camaro. It has an lq4 6.0l with ls3 heads, GM tuned computer, and a comp cams 222/230 @050 and 570 lift, 114 lsa. Mid length headers, running through a 4l80e. Presently the car has a power robbing 14 bolt and heavy stock stall. The 14 bolt is going to be replaced by a much lighter 10 bolt, which will have 3.08 or 3.23 gears (3.43s on now are too much for the highway).

The car might see the quarter mile once a year at most. It is a daily driver. The car made 301 HP at 5400 and peak torque was 315 at 3700 (low numbers being the result of the mustang dyno and power robbing heavy rear and stall - I hope). I really enjoy having some off the line grunt, but I like tall gears for the highway because I drive 10 miles to work every day. I programmed it to lock the stall at light throttle and to shift up to fourth at relatively low speeds, because I like cruising at 40 with low rpms, but mid throttle it kicks down.

Right now the car feels weak - like it isn't making the power it should - despite all systems being perfectly operational. The stock stall is a big part of that. It weighs a ton. So I'm looking for a lightweight stall (less rotational mass =more rwhp) that will multiply torque down low to overcome the tall gears, but will have great street manners, and that will give me a lot of seat of the pants power. Dont get me wrong, i can still chirp the tires with the 3.42, but i would like it to "feel" like a car that makes above 400hp/crank. What stall/configuration would you guys recommend? Can I get away with 3.08 gears?

sounds like you want your cake and eat it too....

i'd talk to chris at circle D, he will set you up a custom converter. since you have the ability to tune your TCC apply/release speeds yourself i'd go fairly large on the converter, but i would also keep the 3.42 gears, with either of the taller gears any stall over 3500 will feel like a dog when you arent on the throttle hard.

I agree with Lee, Chris at circle D can build you a great converter.....

Would love to talk to you about your build. We have several choices. Please give us a call or fill out an "Ask Chris" from and we can help select the best converter for your needs.

We do have a new 278mm HP Series for the 4L80. Might be a nice fit and very budget friendly.

Chris
