Hey guys. I just purchased a converter for my car, its a TCI Super Street Fighter. I picked it up on here, off of another member. This is my first auto car that i am going to be stalling, so i dont really know all that much about converters just yet.

I received the converter yesterday, and all looked good. But when i picked it up to take it out of the box, it made a strange clunking noise. It sounds like there is something large loose inside of it. Its i can hold it flat, and tip it one way, and it will make the noise, and then tip it another, and it will make the noise again. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with this converter? Thanks!

So there should be no slop in the internals of the converter at all even when the converter isnt installed in the trans?

 

id return it and get something better.

 

Most converters are designed like the OE stuff and the internal parts are loose. They will center up on the trans input shaft and stator support. So the noise might be normal, tough to say on a used converter.

This is pretty much what the guy i bought the converter off of said. There isn't a lot of play in there, but it is just enough to notice. I was told that it was pulled out of a running, driving car that he just bought, and he only swapped it because it was to much stall for him.

I'm really stuck here on what to do, should i give it a shot and put it on just to see, or try to get my money back?

 

I bought a used fti here and it made that noise but ran fine and to my knowledge is still doing ok. As chris said the converters will make noise due to some loose parts inside. TCI doesnt have the best rep for converters but I dont think you could penalize the seller because in all actuality the converter is probably ok. I'd run it...

 

I bought a new TCI street fighter converter years ago and it made that same noise. I primed it before installing it and never had a problem with it.

 

yep when i got my brand new converter from circle d it did the same thing. if you shook the converter around you could feel some parts moving... worked perfectly. never really worried me

 

Pretty much the same thing as everyone else is saying. I bought a precision industries vigilante torque converter and it would make a slight clunking sound when handling it. Have had it in the car for a couple years now and don't have a single issue. You should be fine.

 

That is correct. Some converters do make noise. But when you install it, it should all line up and be okay. Check the neck on the converter. If it is nice and smooth, then you know it does not have many hours on it.
