You can swap an older core or newer core 4l80e into your car. I went with an older core because they were cheaper and with solid motor mounts I couldn't reach the top bolt anyway. The older core doesn't have the bolt hole at the 12-noon position. There are more differences btw, but can't recall off hand

Read the stickies at the top of the auto trans forum, and spend a week or so reading up. All answers you could ever want will be in there. Trust me.

If you still have a question after all that, then re-post. Good luck.

Earlier 80e's are stronger, and there seem to be less lubrication related failures with those. Much cheaper than a late model 97+ 4L80E. 12 o' clock bell housing bolt isn't necessary at all, won't make a single difference.

I have a 94 4L80E in mine that I bought locally for $200. Installed a Trans Go HD2 in it and it seems to be working great. Once it goes though, I will be getting one from Jake's.

Any questions you have just post up or PM someone. I am always willing to try and help.

I got one out of a van model year 1995. Another difference between 96 and earlier from 97 and up is the location of the trans cooling lines in and out puts.

Are you guys still using lock-up converters in these 4L80e transmissions?

Early or late 4l80e will work in your car.... Im running a 2001 4l80e in my 98 camaro.

You will need a 4l80e conversion transmission crossmember from midwest chassis.
PCMFORLESS has a plug & play adapter wiring harness for your car that you will need. I am installing a new ( 100.00 ) B&M SFI LS1 Flexplate & a Billet 3600 rpm Lock-up stall converter in my car.
You will need someone that can down load a truck 4l80e file into your stock pcm that will require HP Tuners software to operate the 4l80e in your car. You probably want to retain the converter lock up feature for better mileage & lower rpm on the freeway.

Default Update ... 4L80E swap

You guys will also need to cut out approx. a 4" by 4" area UNDER the floor in one of the stiffeners underside of car to gain clearance where the new harness / electrical connector will go. This is NOT a through hole. You will just be trimming & cutting out part of the stiffener under the floor.

This wont weaken the floor much especially if you have subframe connectors which you should should have on your car anyway.

You will also need to cut 1 1/2" off each side of the bell housing to gain header clearance with a sawzall or portable bandsaw.
I also used LS1 ARP Flex plate & Converter bolts so i dont have to worry about shearing off converter bolts when i bolt slicks onto the car.

Heres a link for some great 4l80e transmission -6 fittings for the swap from ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/6AN-4L80E-GM...3d2b69&vxp=mtr

And these to bring the trans lines forward towards your trans cooler.... http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...rentProductId=

you dont have to Cut anything on the car....
you just whip it with a Sledge Hammer of any size a few times and its all good

and the bellhousing is Just cutting off the ears... its a straight down shot from an existing straight area on it...honestly, you will see it as soon as you look at it.

its actually easier to use the 90* right angle adapters to go backwards first, then curve around and go forward following the frame rail....go above the heat shields and over to the outside of the exhaust on the passenger side and follow the frame rail up to the front

there are 2 options for the 4l80 when it comes to a flax plate...
and you need to call the person making your torque converter to let them know which flex plate you will be using...
one is curved like the 4l60 plate, and one is flat with a special spacer for the converter..

but a 6 bolt converter instead of a 3 bolt and you wont have to worry about shearing anything off.

the older or the newer 4l80 case will work in the car...really the only physical difference that you need to worry about is the top bolt hole not existing on the older versions...
dont worry, its not needed...Just be sure to get the other ones in and torqued properly.

there are LOTS of Crossmember options...
I actually prefer the one that Dave over at Yank Makes..
Lots of people like different things...they all work... pick the one you feel will suit your needs the best

you will need to either chose a full manual valve body or figure out a way to control the shifts electronically.
options become HP Tuners....you can take your stock file, and any truck file with the 4l80 and the same operating system, and send it in to hp tuners and they will move the trans segment over for you...then you still need to change a few pins in the pcm for it to work.
or you can go with an aftermarket controller...Quite a few options there.. the easiest being the Powertrain Control Solutions "Simple Shift"
and a close second being the TCI "EZ-TCU"
powertrain control solutions also makes a TCM-2000 if you want some serious advanced control over your transmission...

Use slow67's method of controlling the transmission easy as pie.

What's the difference between a 4l80 out of a gas truck vs diesel?
